Position Overview:

The School of Construction and the Environment at BCIT is looking for a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Lead Coordinator, Mass Timber and Offsite Construction . This role is responsible for spearheading initiatives aimed at developing educational programs and pilot projects that will facilitate both entry-level training and the upskilling of individuals in the mass timber and offsite construction industries. Collaborating with a team of interdisciplinary professionals, the coordinator will identify training needs and implement enhancements within existing BCIT offerings. The role involves recognizing curriculum gaps and proposing effective solutions. The coordinator will prepare project plans, allocate resources, and oversee project progress from inception to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulates the project's objectives and deliverables, along with a strategic project proposal for actions and implementation aligned with the School's organizational goals. Secures approval of the proposal from management and stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with the Manager to develop the project plan and strategy to meet the objectives of the assigned project.
  • Directs projects to fulfill the goals and deliverables. Monitors project progress and resources, providing updates and addressing challenges with leadership teams and stakeholders.
  • Conducts a comprehensive review of the School's courses and programs to identify existing training or gaps in training related to Mass Timber Construction and its industry skill requirements.
  • Collects data through industry surveys and BCIT initiatives, performing a needs assessment of the construction sector to pinpoint existing training or gaps in training related to Mass Timber and Off-Site Construction.
  • Delivers regular project updates to the Manager, working group, and other stakeholders. Prepares ongoing project progress reports and final detailed technical documentation as necessary.
  • Develops a plan to address the most urgent educational needs of the sector, validating or disproving the demand for training in Installation, Manufacturing, and relevant Design considerations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including the School's Dean, Associate Dean, BCIT staff, external consultants, and industry partners to stay informed about industry needs, skill gaps, developments, and to advance project progress.
  • Remains informed about current industry trends and provides insights on emerging issues and opportunities within the mass timber sector and off-site construction field, enabling the School to capitalize on new opportunities.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in engineering, architecture, science, project management, or a related discipline.
  • Seven years of relevant experience, including a mix of post-secondary teaching, private sector, and supervisory roles, preferably in wood science, mass timber, and/or off-site construction.

  • Proven experience in managing projects and navigating complex project frameworks, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a high degree of self-motivation and business acumen.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to exercise judgment, tact, discretion, and sensitivity when interacting with a diverse range of contacts.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment with a highly diverse population.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, including word processing, database management, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

Salary Range: $65,045 - $113,545 per annum. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience, and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
