The Registered Nurse (RN) will function as a valuable member of the interdisciplinary team and provide care to children and adolescents with complex mental health and medical issues related to a range of eating disorders.
Key Responsibilities- Provide comprehensive care to each patient and family, on the foundation of the RN's competent knowledge of the medical and mental health components of eating disorders.
- Establish effective therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and team members.
- Implement and evaluate various therapeutic interventions, including mental health and medical status examination.
- Provide health teaching to patients and families on both the medical and mental health aspects of an eating disorder.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team of clinicians to provide patient-centered care.
- Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse.
- Current Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing certification with the Canadian Nurses Association (CPMHN).
- Minimum of 3 years recent experience in a tertiary care setting with children and adolescents who have an eating disorder.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in a medical and/or mental health inpatient tertiary care setting working with children and adolescents with an eating disorder.
- Demonstrates clinical expertise in the psychosocial and physical assessment, management, planning, and delivery of interventions for children and adolescents with an eating disorder.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Personal Health Information Protection Act.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the management and safety of children and adolescents who are at risk of self-harm or self-injurious behavior and crisis management.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the etiology of an eating disorder, the treatment interventions available, and the application of Family-Based Therapy (FBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) for children and adolescents.
- Demonstrates excellence in effective therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and team members.
- Demonstrates excellent knowledge of psychopharmacology.
- Demonstrates effective teamwork, organizational, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skill, and ability in health teaching with child and adolescent patients and their families.
- Ability to communicate in an effective manner with children, adolescents, and their families under stressful conditions.
- Demonstrates excellence in interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and work within an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care with members of the healthcare team.
- Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) (will be provided by the program).
- Evidence of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and flexibility.
