Laboratory Assistant

Position Overview

Employment Type: On-site | Casual | Entry Level

This role involves the preparation, extraction, and analysis of environmental samples, specifically soil and water.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage worklists for sample processing;
  • Retrieve and handle samples from storage, including lifting and transporting materials;
  • Accurately measure sample mass and volume, incorporating surrogates and conducting extractions with standard laboratory solvents;
  • Implement quality control measures by adding matrix spikes and surrogate solutions;
  • Maintain precise and complete records on bench sheets;
  • Operate basic laboratory instruments such as pipettes, shakers, and centrifuges;
  • Prepare analytical standards and laboratory reagents;
  • Organize tasks to meet turnaround times and hold time requirements;
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with any deviations requiring supervisory approval;
  • Follow strict quality assurance and quality control protocols;
  • Availability for overtime work is essential;
  • Utilize established methods to ensure analytical quality and safety;
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations and ALS policies;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile:

  • Proficient in English communication (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general computer skills;
  • Strong data entry skills are advantageous;
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy in a fast-paced environment;
  • Highly organized with a proven ability to meet deadlines;
  • Analytical mindset with critical thinking skills in uncertain situations;
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Strong work ethic and readiness to undertake various tasks;
  • Commitment to high standards and a client-focused approach.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory;
  • Experience in a fast-paced, production, or preparation environment is preferred;
  • Knowledge from high school science courses and/or basic laboratory safety is beneficial;
  • Experience with chemicals or in a laboratory context is a plus, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. (14 kg) regularly and carry samples over short distances;
  • Capability to sit or stand for extended periods;
  • Manual dexterity for intricate and repetitive tasks;
  • Exposure to unpleasant fumes may occur;
  • Compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements is necessary.
