Position Summary

RFF is in search of PhD-level researchers in economics or related disciplines who are passionate about influencing policy discussions and making a significant difference in environmental decision-making. Successful candidates will produce high-quality, publishable research; spearhead new research initiatives; and engage actively in disseminating research findings and other forms of policy outreach.

Within the overarching themes of effective strategies for achieving net-zero emissions and climate resilience, RFF is particularly keen on enhancing expertise in policy design and modeling aimed at emission reductions and carbon dioxide removal; fostering the adoption of innovative technologies; emissions accounting; and financing low-carbon investments in both public and private sectors.

Exceptional candidates with relevant expertise in other climate-related areas will also be considered, especially those with knowledge pertinent to our programs targeting climate solutions across industrial, fuels, electricity, forestry, and agricultural sectors, as well as climate risks and resilience.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in economics or a closely related field, accompanied by over 5 years of post-degree professional experience in climate policy research; OR,
  • An alternative graduate degree (e.g., MA, JD, or PhDs less closely related to economics) with at least 10 years of post-degree professional experience in climate policy research and engagement.
  • Proven expertise in one or more of the aforementioned topics, with a track record of research publications and/or leadership in managing teams that produce research outputs.
  • Experience collaborating with government agencies and a network of contacts in governmental and non-governmental organizations related to environmental policy.
  • Demonstrated capability to establish and lead new research and policy engagement areas that have a lasting impact on environmental decisions.
  • Strong research leadership skills, including project and program management experience.
  • Management or supervisory experience with a focus on leading, coaching, and mentoring staff, with progressive responsibilities.
  • Experience in fundraising from government, foundations, corporations, multilateral organizations, and/or individuals.
  • Proficiency in strategic communications, including outreach to media and targeted audiences across public, business, and nonprofit sectors.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrated interest in teamwork and the ability to contribute to organizational strategy development and execution.
  • Experience in building and maintaining partnerships with organizations, academic institutions, and/or multilateral entities.
