Epidemiologist or Senior Epidemiologist in Cancer Research & Prevention

Provincial Health Services Authority, Department of Cancer Control Research

Regular, Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the rank of Epidemiologist or Senior Epidemiologist.

PHSA is dedicated to minimizing cancer occurrence, decreasing cancer-related mortality, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by cancer. It offers a comprehensive cancer control program for the population by collaborating with community partners to provide a variety of oncology services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation, and palliative care.

The PHSA is seeking an Epidemiologist or Senior Epidemiologist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in a multidisciplinary program of epidemiological research. The candidate must be committed to developing an integrative research program within the Department of Cancer Control Research, focusing on cancer etiology through population-based studies and the creation of innovative prevention strategies to lower cancer incidence.

The position will be classified as either Epidemiologist or Senior Epidemiologist based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, who is anticipated to possess a competitive profile that will facilitate a partnered Assistant or Associate Professor appointment at an affiliated academic institution.

The candidate should hold a PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, or a related field. Alongside a robust record of research productivity in the domain, the applicant is expected to have a clear vision for an independent research agenda and an interest in collaborative research initiatives.

Furthermore, the candidate must demonstrate enthusiasm and capability in achieving excellence in teaching and will be expected to contribute to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate educational activities in their area of expertise. The successful candidate will also present a clear strategy to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion principles within their research program, laboratory environment, and teaching practices.

Equity and diversity are fundamental to academic excellence. An inclusive and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been historically underrepresented. We encourage applications from individuals belonging to groups that have faced marginalization on any grounds.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a detailed summary of research interests and the anticipated impact of their research program (maximum 5 pages), a statement of teaching accomplishments and interests (maximum 2 pages), an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion statement (maximum 1 page), and contact information for at least 3 references.

Successful candidates will possess:

  • A commitment to fostering reconciliation in Canada as per the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Awareness of the social, economic, political, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism initiatives.

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

Salary: The starting salary for this position will be determined based on the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan.

What we do:

PHSA provides comprehensive cancer control for the population. PHSA plans, manages, and evaluates specialized health services in collaboration with health authorities to ensure equitable and cost-effective healthcare delivery.

PHSA is committed to employment equity, encouraging all qualified individuals to apply. We recognize that our ability to provide optimal care for our diverse patient populations relies on a rich diversity of skills, knowledge, backgrounds, and experiences, and we value a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
