Clinical Laboratory Specialist

Role Overview:
Under the supervision of the Laboratory Technologist III and the Laboratory Operations Manager, the main objective of this role is to conduct laboratory analyses across various sections including Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Coagulation, Blood Banking, and Water Testing within the Medical Laboratory Department. This position operates under the medical oversight of the Regional Medical Director of Laboratory Services/Regional Pathologist.
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of High School or equivalent;
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Laboratory Science training program;
- Registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS);
- Current registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals;
- Familiarity with Clinical Meditech Modules - Laboratory Information System and Hospital Information System is advantageous;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of addressing inquiries from staff and stakeholders regarding laboratory procedures;
- Submission of a satisfactory certificate of conduct is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct diagnostic laboratory testing adhering to established laboratory standards and the protocols of the Labrador-Grenfell Zone;
- Ensure compliance with all laboratory accreditation requirements as stipulated by Accreditation Canada and the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH);
- Operate laboratory instruments with proficiency and assurance;
- Engage in the quality improvement initiatives of the laboratory department by monitoring control results and assisting in audit preparations;
- Participate in the maintenance program for laboratory equipment, performing necessary upkeep as per the procedure manual;
- Contribute to the Medical Laboratory Team by managing inventory supplies and reporting any stock concerns to the Section Lead Medical Laboratory Technologist;
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in all work areas within the Medical Laboratory Department;
- Assume responsibility for daily laboratory operations as directed by the Section Lead Technologist;
- Collaborate with the Medical Laboratory Team to develop indicators for enhancing the quality and efficiency of Regional Laboratory Services;
- Actively participate in quality improvement programs within the Medical Laboratory Department;
- Engage in annual reviews of specialized training programs to ensure competency;
- Adhere to infection control protocols when handling samples and specimens;
- Review departmental safety manuals and participate in training for new employees and students;
- Partake in the rotational emergency standby system as assigned;
- Uphold patient confidentiality and comply with the regulations of the Labrador-Grenfell Zone;
- Participate in continuing education opportunities provided by Labrador Grenfell Health to stay updated on technological advancements;
- Prioritize safety for all patients, clients, and colleagues in the workplace;
- Perform additional related duties as necessary.
Compensation:
Salary range: LX-27 of the NAPE-LX salary scales, $31.53 to $39.41 per hour, inclusive of applicable allowances.
Work Schedule:
70 hours biweekly, with a requirement for day, evening, and weekend shifts, in addition to standby and call-back duties.
