Position Overview:

The Spiritual & Religious Care Advisor plays a crucial role in enhancing the spiritual wellbeing of residents within the City of Toronto's long-term care facilities. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive spiritual care programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of residents and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulates and recommends modifications to policies and procedures that align with program-specific requirements.
  • Contributes to the budgetary process in collaboration with management, ensuring financial resources are utilized effectively.
  • Provides emotional support and short-term counseling to residents, families, and staff following critical incidents, while maintaining confidentiality and proper documentation.
  • Handles sensitive information, conducting necessary investigations and reporting findings to supervisors as required.
  • Oversees the performance of external spiritual service providers, ensuring quality and compliance with established standards.
  • Designs and maintains spiritual care initiatives that cater to the needs of residents and their families.
  • Facilitates admission assessments and coordinates participation in care conferences, ensuring thorough documentation of spiritual care activities.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to create personalized care plans, particularly for residents in palliative and end-of-life stages.
  • Evaluates the spiritual needs of residents and provides direct care or referrals to appropriate team members or community resources.
  • Partners with volunteer services to cultivate relationships with faith-based organizations, enhancing the support network for residents.
  • Organizes and coordinates worship services, memorials, and special bereavement events, ensuring accessibility for all residents.
  • Offers spiritual support to residents and families, particularly during times of emotional distress.
  • Develops educational programs for volunteers and staff to enhance understanding of various religious practices and beliefs.
  • Utilizes community resources to ensure residents can connect with their chosen faith communities.
  • Monitors the activities of faith groups providing services and facilitates connections with residents' previous faith communities.
  • Engages in quality improvement initiatives related to spiritual care, collecting and analyzing relevant data.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with management regarding operational matters related to spiritual care delivery.
  • Participates in committees and discussions to advocate for spiritual care issues within the interdisciplinary team.
  • Creates opportunities for residents to engage in spiritual and cultural practices.
  • Maintains an updated list of residents by faith group to ensure access to appropriate spiritual services.
  • Contributes to the development of policies and protocols related to spiritual care and end-of-life services.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Divinity or a related field is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in providing spiritual care within a healthcare or long-term care setting is essential.
  • Membership with a recognized spiritual care association is preferred.
  • Completion of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an asset.
  • Ability to integrate theological principles with behavioral science in spiritual care practice.
  • Demonstrated spiritual maturity and sensitivity in interactions with residents and families.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and experience in managing critical incidents.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant applications.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is an advantage.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Willingness to travel to various long-term care facilities.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Selected candidates will be required to undergo a Police Reference Check, tuberculosis screening, and provide proof of immunization as part of the hiring process.
