Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Spiritual Care Director to join our team at Baycrest. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing spiritual care programs that meet the diverse needs of our residents and patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Development and Implementation

Design, plan, and execute spiritual care programs that cater to the unique needs of our residents and patients, including weekly Jewish learning programs, High-Holiday services, and other Jewish holiday programming.

Spiritual Direction and Counseling

Provide individual and group counseling to residents, patients, families, and members of the Baycrest congregation and the broader community, offering spiritual direction and support.

Life-Cycle Support

Offer end-of-life counseling to residents, patients, and families, providing emotional support and guidance during difficult times.

Committee Participation

Participate in and provide expert guidance to the Apotex and Hospital end-of-life/palliative committees, ensuring that spiritual care needs are met.

Community Engagement

Foster relationships with external organizations, agencies, and community resources to provide spiritual care services to residents and patients.

Staffing and Coverage

Maintain adequate staffing levels and coverage for all religious and spiritual care ceremonies, ensuring that services are provided as needed.

Leadership and Collaboration

Lead religious ceremonies and services, collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless delivery of spiritual care services, and act as a liaison between Baycrest and external organizations.

Policy Development and Compliance

Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to Jewish faith-based institution operational requirements, ensuring compliance with professional and religious governing bodies.

Professional Development

Support the operation of the Clinical Pastoral Education training program, maintain CASC accreditation, and promote inter-professional education and collaboration across all disciplines.

Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, and internal responsibilities, including health and safety, WHMIS, workplace violence, and MSDS.

Continuous Improvement

Monitor, improve, and adapt spiritual care services to meet the evolving needs of our residents and patients, balancing the Jewish identity of Baycrest with the needs of a diverse, multi-faith, and heterogeneous ethnic geriatric population.

Qualifications
  • Education

Completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree program or equivalent.

Certifications and Memberships

Successful attainment of semicha or similar rabbinic ordination, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or Pastoral Counselling Education (PCE) certification, membership in good standing with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care, Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains, and a recognized national/international professional rabbinic association.

Experience

3 years of related experience providing spiritual care and chaplaincy services, including at least 3 years in a leadership/management capacity, preferably in a non-profit organization and a complex healthcare facility.

Skills

Exceptional verbal communication skills, superior written, listening, and presentation communication skills, knowledge of Russian, Hebrew, and/or Yiddish, comprehensive knowledge of Halacha, excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills, and exceptional counseling skills, especially focused on grief counseling.
