Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Interior Health Authority is seeking an experienced Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join our expanding Psychiatry department at Kelowna General Hospital. As a key member of our team, you will have the opportunity to deliver excellence in care while working within a strong culture of teamwork. In this role, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing inpatient and outpatient child and youth mental health services within the hospital and the local community. We welcome candidates with experience in DDMH.
Hospital work will involve psychiatric assessment and treatment of patients up to and including 18 years of age, who are usually admitted through the Emergency Department. Our service is supported by a Mental Health Liaison worker to assist with access to community-based programs. Kelowna General Hospital is also home to the Interior Health tertiary Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, which offers a specialized inpatient program for youth ages 12-17 who are struggling with significant psychiatric symptoms. The Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit has 8 beds and the program runs seven days per week.
Evaluation of our patients is carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising of nurses, youth and family counselors, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers, psychiatrists, and other disciplines as needed. Our assessment process requires the active participation of adolescents, their families, and community Mental Health support services.
Duties will include, but not be limited to, patient assessment and treatment, collaboration with clinicians and managers, and assistance with the development and maintenance of appropriate programs, policies, and procedures. You will have active staff privileges at RIH and be the Most Responsible Physician when your patients are admitted to hospital. You will assume care for a portion of new child & youth psychiatric admissions. Participation in the general on-call schedule is expected.
Community work will involve supporting family physicians, pediatricians, and child & youth mental health services. A collaborative program exists to serve the needs of youth in transition to adulthood. Subspecialty areas include eating disorders and substance use disorders. Kelowna is also one of seven BC cities to have a Foundry Centre in the community. Foundry is a province-wide initiative that offers young people ages 12-24 health and wellness resources, services, and supports – online and through integrated service centres.
This role also offers teaching opportunities to medical students and residents as Kelowna General Hospital is affiliated with UBC Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program.

Qualifications:- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC)
- Eligible for licensure with CPSBC
- Doctorate in Medicine
- Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory
- Demonstrated expertise and experience in Child and Youth psychiatry
