Sales Consultant

Reports To: VP of Commercial Sales

Position Overview:

The Sales Consultant is essential in delivering exceptional client service to all customers. This role is instrumental in achieving the overall sales objectives of the organization, including the execution of strategies aimed at fulfilling both long-term and short-term growth targets, which encompass cross-selling opportunities and the acquisition of new clientele.

The primary focus of this position is to promote and sell commercial insurance solutions and policies while fostering new business relationships, all while ensuring a high level of professional service to clients. The Sales Consultant directly contributes to the company's sales ambitions by implementing strategies designed to achieve growth targets, including cross-selling and developing new business.

This role may also involve sharing best practices in sales strategies with colleagues, assisting in the establishment and monitoring of sales objectives, and providing regular updates to senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive new business sales for the organization, achieving and/or surpassing assigned revenue goals for personal and/or commercial insurance with both new and existing clients.
  • Evaluate risks, create proposals, market to insurers, calculate premiums, bind coverage, and prepare documentation tailored to client requirements.
  • Maintain an annual retention rate of 92% or higher on the existing portfolio.
  • Develop and execute a personal and/or commercial sales/business development strategy to meet individual sales objectives, including cross-selling and upselling within the current portfolio.
  • Proactively engage with leads to convert inquiries into clients, aiming for desired closing ratios.
  • Address client inquiries and assess the needs of potential clients to provide guidance on coverage options.
  • Deliver ongoing support from quote to binding to ensure a seamless client experience in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of insurance products, internal processes, and systems.
  • Coordinate payment and financing arrangements.
  • Conduct regular renewal reviews with Personal and/or Commercial Account Managers.
  • Prepare for and participate in renewal negotiations and remarketing as necessary.
  • Obtain quotes for both new and existing clients.
  • Collaborate effectively with Account Managers and fellow Sales Consultants.
  • Stay informed about new products and initiatives.
  • Maintain monthly sales records and provide reports to management.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date files while monitoring insurance claims activity.
  • Respond to inquiries from insurance companies.
  • Adhere to all corporate guidelines and mandates, including proper rating/underwriting strategies, coverage, and utilization of insurance markets.
  • Participate in various projects as required.
  • Uphold a professional level of confidentiality and high standards of business ethics.

Qualifications:

  1. RIBO license is mandatory.
  2. Post-secondary education in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Sales/Marketing) or an equivalent combination of education and experience; CAIB, CRM, CIP designations are advantageous.
  3. A minimum of 5 years' experience in personal and/or commercial lines insurance sales and service.
  4. Exceptional negotiation skills, demonstrated by successfully closing deals and sales contracts.
  5. Strong conflict resolution abilities with the capacity to influence decisions and gain support.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to high performance standards and ongoing professional development.
  7. Extensive knowledge of insurance trends, products, laws, and sales concepts.
  8. Previous experience in the relevant territory or sector, along with awareness of competitor activities.
  9. Understanding of business strategy and its impact on client and corporate objectives.
  10. A results-driven professional with a robust work ethic.
  11. Ability to take initiative and maintain meticulous attention to detail and deadlines.
  12. Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with proficiency in identifying and analyzing relevant data and defining critical issues.
  13. Outstanding communication skills, including effective use of digital communication technologies.

Working Conditions:


• Significant use of electronic media, including telephone and computer.


• Frequent local travel to meet with prospective and existing clients.


• Overnight travel may be necessary.


• Property inspections of prospective and existing clients as required.


• Availability outside of standard business hours may be expected.
