The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) is a leading trade association for independent producers in Canada. We represent hundreds of companies engaged in the development, production, and distribution of English-language content for TV, feature film, and digital media channels. Our mission is to ensure a bright future for domestic media production and Canadian content.
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Director, Government Relations to join our team in Ottawa. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and executing various government relations strategies, building influential relationships with government decision makers, and monitoring proposed legislation and regulation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute government relations strategies to advance the CMPA's priorities and interests.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government decision makers, including Ministers, Members of Parliament, and department officials.
- Monitor proposed legislation and regulation, advise CMPA senior staff on implications, and provide recommendations on responses and courses of action.
- Support the policy work of the CMPA and other priority initiatives.
- Travel to represent the CMPA at industry and stakeholder events.
- Manage external GR consultants and the annual GR budget.
Requirements
- Hold a university degree or equivalent level of professional experience in government affairs, public administration, or a related field.
- At least 7+ years of professional experience working in government affairs or public administration at the provincial or federal level.
- Thorough understanding of the functioning of Parliament and provincial legislatures, including legislative and policy development processes.
- Ability to communicate specialized and technical information with stakeholders and political officials.
- Proven background of building and maintaining effective working relationships with elected officials and senior departmental officials.
- Successful track record of building and executing successful advocacy initiatives.
- Ability to manage the work of external firms and consultants.
Preferred Qualifications
- Possess knowledge of the business of producing film, television, and digital media content, and the related industries for delivering that content to consumers.
- Considerable knowledge and understanding of public policy and regulatory measures in support of the film, television, and digital media production sectors in Canada.

- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency with the English language at a high professional level.
- Working ability with the French language is considered an asset.
