Job Summary

The Nutrition Technician - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and accurate preparation and delivery of infant feeds in the NICU. This position requires strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret and calculate infant feeds in accordance with patient diet orders
  • Prepare and deliver infant feeds in a controlled environment, adhering to aseptic procedures and minimizing waste
  • Effectively communicate with NICU team members, including nursing staff and dietitians, to ensure integrated patient-centered care
  • Prioritize and prepare accurate feeding orders, handling unexpected changes in patient feeding requirements
  • Deliver prepared feeds to the refrigerator, adhering to aseptic procedures and avoiding waste
  • Perform daily and regular cleaning of workspace and mixing equipment
  • Perform regular audits to ensure equipment is safe for use
  • Report malfunctioning equipment in accordance with established unit protocols
  • Properly dispose of expressed breast milk, powdered formulas, and additives in accordance with established unit protocols
  • Maintain storage facilities for all inventory
  • Participate in continuing education activities for self, peers, and members of the inter-professional healthcare team
  • Comply with the hospital's infection prevention and control practices
  • Participate in collaborative initiatives with the healthcare team to improve efficiencies and management of Timless Medical Systems and express breast milk/donor feeding policies and procedures

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food and Nutrition from a University recognized in Dietetics and/or a 3-year diploma from a recognized accredited college program and the successful completion of a CSNM (Canadian Society of Nutrition Management) accredited program in Food Services Administration and Technology
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of aseptic technique in the preparation of feeds
  • Two years' experience in a healthcare setting
  • Membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management preferred
  • Working knowledge of neonatal nutrition, therapeutic diets, and additives/formulas preferred
  • Proficiency with computerized diet order entry systems preferred
  • Experience with Neonatal/Paediatric patient population preferred
  • Experience with inventory control for milk preparation and stock preferred
  • Bilingualism in French/English an asset
