Direct Support Specialist

Job Summary:
The Direct Support Provider will work with children, youth, and families to provide support and assistance in restoring family functioning, ensuring the health and safety of participants, promoting opportunities for growth and development, and encouraging decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide respite services for family and other caregivers
- Create supportive relationships with individuals and their family
- Provide supervision, companionship, and personal care of the participant
- Promote the safety and well-being of the participant
- Implement behavior support plans
- Assist, support, and participate in community services and recreation activities
- Provide transportation to recreational outings and appointments
- Teach independent living skills (e.g., self-care, cooking, community access, budgeting, and banking)
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Must provide a satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check
- Must have a valid driver's license, access to a vehicle, and the ability to travel within a specified region of Manitoba
- Ability to work flexible hours of work—days, evenings, weekends, overnights
- Physical ability to do all necessary duties (may include lifting, physical activities, etc.)
- Ability to work with children and families in a supportive manner while establishing and maintaining professional boundaries
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with children, families, co-workers, and agencies
- Ability to work with families, children, and youth facing multiple barriers such as financial difficulties, addiction, abuse, mental health, etc.
- Ability to work with families, children, and youth from diverse cultural and social backgrounds and have an awareness of cultural values and differences
- Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and implement tasks and activities appropriately
- Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills, including the ability to handle confidential, sensitive, and non-routine issues in a challenging environment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Excellent written communication skills
- Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe
- Knowledge of community resources and programming
- Ability to teach parenting skills, life skills, and household management skills
