We are seeking a proactive, strategic, and results-oriented individual to join our team as a Lead Energy Trader, specializing in electricity trading within our Eastern markets.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Trading, this role is pivotal in managing both physical and financial risks associated with trading activities.

As a vital member of the Trading team, you will collaborate with colleagues to achieve and surpass financial trading objectives.

This position presents an exciting chance to engage in OPG's public outreach and educational initiatives, reinforcing our commitment to enhancing our social license.

Responsibilities include achieving financial targets through direct trading of financial instruments while effectively managing risks in an electricity trading context that involves physical delivery across various ISOs and RTOs;

  • Continuously research, develop, and implement innovative trading strategies to expand business opportunities;
  • Engage in negotiations with external partners regarding the acquisition and sale of electricity and associated transmission services;
  • Ensure compliance with all transactional activities according to established policies, standards, and controls, adhering to the code of conduct and regulatory requirements;
  • Collect and analyze competitive market intelligence and conditions;
  • Stay informed about industry trends and regulatory developments;
  • Build and maintain a robust network of contacts with marketers, brokers, and industry counterparts; A Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Economics, or Business Administration is required; an MBA or CFA designation is advantageous but not mandatory.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a flexible hybrid office environment.

  • Minimum of 4 to 6 years of proprietary trading experience in Eastern Markets and Ontario;
  • Financial acumen, including familiarity with technical analysis;
  • Comprehensive understanding of fundamental market drivers and secondary influences;
  • Knowledge of risk management principles and practices;
  • Experience with Bulk Electricity System (BES) operations and their impact on market pricing and volatility;
  • Proficient in computer programming and software applications that support business operations;
  • Experience in adhering to standardized processes for safety and regulatory compliance; a willingness to collaborate with high-performing individuals within a trading team; the ideal candidate will demonstrate unwavering integrity and a commitment to upholding corporate values and the OPG Code of Business Conduct.
