The Legal Services Division of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is dedicated to providing a comprehensive array of legal services. This includes the issuance of Notices of Proposal and Orders of Monetary Penalty, representation of the Registrar in Tribunal and Court proceedings, and offering legal guidance on corporate and administrative law matters. Additionally, the division is involved in drafting contracts, assisting in legislative drafting, and contributing to policy development.

We are seeking a Counsel to enhance our Litigation team. The selected Counsel will report directly to the Legal Director of Litigation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver legal counsel and services in administrative law, regulation, and litigation on behalf of the Registrar of AGCO.
  • Provide high-quality, timely, and consistent legal advice regarding the statutes and legislative instruments administered by the AGCO, as well as the application of statute and common law to AGCO's operations.
  • Engage in litigation activities, including those under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, the Gaming Control Act, the Cannabis Licence Act, and the Horse Racing Licence Act, along with appeals and judicial reviews to the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
  • Assist in the drafting and evaluation of legislation, contracts, and various legal documents.
  • Support committee initiatives or special projects and liaise with the public, other governmental entities, and law enforcement on behalf of the Registrar.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Possesses a Law Degree with substantial relevant experience in public service, regulatory bodies, or regulated entities.
  • Holds a valid membership with the Law Society of Ontario in good standing.
  • Demonstrates experience in administrative law litigation.
  • Exhibits strong advocacy capabilities.
  • Has knowledge of pertinent legal and regulatory frameworks and the ability to navigate these systems effectively.
  • Familiarity with the industries regulated by the AGCO and the relevant legislation is advantageous.
  • Shows a proven ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Possesses strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Displays excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Demonstrates superior interpersonal skills, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Exhibits exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced, complex, and dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to travel as required, with a valid Ontario driver's license.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada and will undergo a criminal background check.
