Definity is a leading property and casualty insurer, seeking a highly skilled Senior Claims Counsel to join our team. As a key member of our Claims department, you will play a critical role in shaping our litigation strategy and advocating for our clients in court.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead litigation from inception through to trial, managing multiple tort files and advising on litigation strategies at the case level.
- Prepare written court materials, appear in court, and provide expert advice on litigation matters.
- Collaborate with our Claims department to develop and implement effective litigation strategies.
Requirements:
- Law degree from an accredited law school (LLB or Juris Doctor).
- Licensed by the Law Society of Ontario to practice law as a lawyer in Ontario.
- 2-10 years of post-call experience working in insurance or personal injury litigation, with trial experience preferred.
- Experience handling property damage and/or construction matters is an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and PowerPoint.
- High degree of personal ethics, integrity, and responsibility, with the ability to deal with sensitive issues and safeguard confidential information.
- Assertiveness in practice, but reasonable and forthright.
- Interest in court advocacy, especially trial work.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills across a range of contexts.
- Excellent negotiation and facilitation skills, with a proven capability for effective presentation tools/methods.
- Sound judgment, with the ability to critically analyze situations, problem-solve, and deal with ambiguity.
- Ability to perform under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle multiple, yet sometimes conflicting priorities.
