POSITION OVERVIEW

The Substance Use Support Specialist will deliver personalized assistance to individuals facing challenges with substance use and concurrent mental health conditions through direct oversight and therapeutic interventions. This role involves close collaboration with the Program Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage assigned client care, ensuring accurate documentation and oversight of individuals in residential treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Provide both individual and group counseling sessions, facilitate referrals to clinical therapists, and educate residents about addiction within a therapeutic community framework.
  • Organize and lead educational workshops focusing on mental health and substance use topics.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of crisis intervention strategies and the effects of trauma on mental health and substance use challenges.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings and case discussions to enhance service delivery.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of Grade 12, with a diploma or degree in community support work, addiction services, or a related field such as counseling or social work. Other relevant educational backgrounds will also be considered.
  • Experience in a residential treatment environment is advantageous.
  • Understanding of Indigenous history, culture, practices, and beliefs is essential.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and supportive counseling abilities.
  • Experience working with at-risk or vulnerable populations.
  • Capacity to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Conflict resolution capabilities.
  • Organizational skills with effective decision-making abilities.
  • Commitment to treating all participants with dignity and respect.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector verification and child abuse registry check.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification is a plus.
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certification is an asset.
  • Able to function effectively in a demanding environment.
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality protocols regarding all client interactions and referrals.
