We are seeking a Project Accountant based in Edmonton. This position is pivotal in overseeing all financial management and fiscal administration aspects of a project. The successful candidate will ensure that all team members, including the Project Manager and Superintendent, adhere to company financial policies and procedures, while also communicating any potential profitability concerns or risks to management. This role may involve periodic site visits or full-time on-site presence as required.

Reporting Structure: This position reports to the Accounting Manager – Operational Finance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze prime contracts and engage in project initiation meetings with project personnel to guarantee contract compliance and effective project setup.
  • Examine project estimates for compliance with procedural guidelines, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
  • Oversee project receivables, payables, and holdbacks to ensure timely collection and disbursement.
  • Review cost and time & materials reports for correct coding and charge-out rates.
  • Prepare and input adjustments to costs and rates as necessary.
  • Verify cost recoveries for precision and thoroughness.
  • Develop and update monthly billing schedules of values for Project Managers to complete as needed.
  • Generate invoices and attach relevant schedules, statutory declarations, WCB clearances, and any other client-required documentation.
  • Input approved invoices and reconcile total billed amounts to date in the eCMS; purge detailed billing if applicable.
  • Maintain the invoice monitor weekly with planned invoice completion timelines.
  • Prepare fee reconciliations for Construction Management jobs.
  • Complete the job closeout process.
  • Report on the status of under-billed amounts monthly.
  • Review and report on accounts receivable and project cash flow.
  • Collaborate with project teams to provide revenue estimates to Corporate Accounting.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2-year Accounting Diploma or equivalent experience in the construction accounting sector.
  • Proven experience in roles where exceptional customer service was essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook and Excel.
  • Familiarity with the Alberta Builders' Lien Act, construction contracts, or principles of LEAN continuous improvement is advantageous.
  • Experience in coaching teams in collaborative planning is a plus.
  • Knowledge or experience in continuous improvement methodologies is beneficial.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent professional written and verbal communication skills.
