Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada University of Lethbridge Full time

Position Overview

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship associated with a study funded by CIHR, titled Patient Oriented Innovative Nutrition Trial (POINT). The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in the development of an innovative clinical trial (iCT) aimed at evaluating the comparative effectiveness of a multinutrient intervention for children and adolescents diagnosed with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with patients, healthcare professionals, and decision-makers to establish prioritized study outcomes.

Research Project Summary The postdoctoral fellow (PDF) will assist in the POINT study by designing an iCT to assess the comparative effectiveness of multinutrients in relation to stimulant medications, or in combination with dietary changes and/or behavioral therapies for youth with ADHD. The objectives of the POINT study include: 1) assembling a cross-disciplinary team that includes diverse stakeholders and creating terms of reference for an advisory group of knowledge users; and 2) designing a patient-oriented iCT study that aligns with stakeholder-identified priorities and clinically significant outcomes.

Key Responsibilities Under the supervision of Dr. Brenda Leung, the incumbent will be responsible for leading the research activities of the project, which will include but are not limited to the following core responsibilities: Facilitate communication and collaboration among the team, Advisory Group, and other stakeholders while organizing regular meetings, webinars, retreats, and engagement events; Assist in the creation of surveys/interviews and recruitment materials; Conduct primary and secondary data collection, including interviews when appropriate; Engage in statistical analyses such as mediator/moderator analyses of sample characteristics to determine sample criteria for stratified adaptive design; utilize statistical simulations to investigate multiple arms comparisons: e.g., multinutrients versus stimulant medications, or in conjunction with dietary modifications and/or behavioral therapies. Contribute to the design of the iCT, considering multi-arm multi-stage, adaptive dose-ranging, group-sequential (early termination), or population enrichment methodologies; Participate in knowledge translation activities, including presenting research at international conferences and other events; preparing research for publication in leading international journals; and writing for diverse audiences; Oversee social media, newsletters, and outreach initiatives; Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills A PhD in epidemiology, health sciences, or a related health discipline obtained within the last five years is required. Training in strategic patient-oriented research (SPOR) is essential. The candidate must demonstrate meaningful engagement with patients who have lived experience and knowledge users, as well as an understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles, particularly concerning marginalized groups. Evidence of strong research capabilities, interest in the field of children/youth and ADHD, and clinical research is essential. A background in mixed methods research, including biostatistical testing (related to mediator/moderator analysis, multiple arms comparison, and similar approaches) and qualitative techniques (such as qualitative interviewing and analysis) is preferred. Familiarity with innovative clinical trial design is an asset.

The successful candidate must possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment, while also managing time effectively. Strong communication skills and the ability to share information in a collaborative manner are required. Proven self-motivation, initiative, resourcefulness, and creativity, along with the capacity to generate ideas and foster positive outcomes, are crucial.
