As a Counsel specializing in Property & Casualty (P&C) Litigation, your primary responsibility will be managing a diverse range of lower to moderate complexity bodily injury and property claims on behalf of The Co-operators and its insured clients. You will also provide comprehensive legal advice, training, and guidance to agents, insured clients, and staff members. Additionally, you will assist senior legal professionals on more complex litigation matters as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Effectively manage all aspects of claims litigation from initiation to resolution, commensurate with your experience.
  • Collaborate with Claims colleagues to resolve litigation by providing assessments, legal opinions, conducting legal research, and participating in various legal proceedings as necessary.
  • Travel as required for litigation matters.
  • Evaluate situations and offer advice as needed, determining the necessity for expert involvement and identifying issues that require escalation to senior management.
  • Provide legal and strategic guidance on a wide array of topics pertinent to The Co-operators Group Ltd and its subsidiaries, focusing on your area of legal expertise.
  • Deliver training and support to claims personnel while assisting senior legal professionals with complex litigation cases.
  • Recommend process improvements to mitigate financial and legal risks.
Qualifications for Success:
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in insurance defense or plaintiff personal injury law.
  • A Juris Doctor (JD), Bachelor of Laws (LLB), or equivalent legal degree.
  • Active membership in the legal regulatory body in Alberta.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to present information effectively while collaborating with others.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in drafting, with the ability to engage effectively with all organizational levels, especially senior management.
  • Proficient negotiation skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret and understand case law and legal statutes.
  • Capability to service clients within Alberta.
  • Trial and/or arbitration experience is considered an asset.
