In the role of Counsel, Property & Casualty (P&C) Litigation, you will manage the daily handling of various bodily injury and property claims of lower to moderate complexity on behalf of The Co-operators or its insured clients. Additionally, you will offer general legal counsel, training, and support to agents, insured clients, and internal staff. You will also assist senior legal professionals with more complex litigation matters as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Effectively manage all aspects of claims litigation from initiation to resolution, based on your experience.
  • Collaborate with Claims colleagues to resolve litigation by providing legal assessments, opinions, conducting research, and participating in mediations, motions, and trials as necessary.
  • Travel as required for litigation matters.
  • Evaluate situations and provide legal advice, determining the need for expert involvement and identifying issues for senior management attention.
  • Offer general legal guidance on a wide range of topics relevant to The Co-operators Group Ltd and its subsidiaries, focusing on your areas of expertise.
  • Provide training and support to claims personnel and assist senior legal professionals with complex litigation cases.
  • Propose process improvements to mitigate financial and legal risks.
Qualifications for Success:
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in insurance defense or personal injury law.
  • A Law Degree (LLB, JD, or equivalent).
  • Membership in the regulatory body for lawyers in Alberta.
  • Strong critical thinking and communication skills, with the ability to present information effectively.
  • Excellent drafting abilities in both technical and plain English, with the capacity to engage with all organizational levels.
  • Effective negotiation skills and keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to comprehend and analyze case law and legal statuses.
  • Capability to serve clients within Alberta.
  • Trial and/or arbitration experience is considered an asset.
