Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team at the Court of Appeal. As a key member of our team, you will provide legal and administrative services to support the efficient administration of justice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Court in the provision of legal and administrative services to support the administration of justice.
  • Prepare for the hearing of appeals and applications, conduct research and legal analysis, and prepare legal memoranda and judgments.
  • Review appeal materials and consult with Justices on legal issues that may require additional research.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in legislation and case law.
  • Maintain and update internal legal resources for use by the judiciary and judicial staff.
  • Draft and/or edit papers, speeches, and presentation materials as requested.
  • Participate in Court administration committee work and help manage the student program.
Requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including speechwriting skills.
  • Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, prioritizing, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Well-developed legal research skills.
  • Ability to work in a highly demanding environment with limited supervision.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree supplemented with a minimum of four (4) years directly related legal experience.
  • Extensive experience with Canadian legal research tools, well-developed research and analytical skills, and exceptional legal writing skills.
  • Prior court or tribunal experience.
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or eligibility for membership.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Laws degree (LLM).
  • Law journal and other legal writing experience.
  • Supervisory work experience.
  • Written and oral communication skills in French.
