Role Summary:

In alignment with the Vision, Purpose, and Values of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), the safety of patients and staff is paramount and a collective responsibility. The role demands a commitment to the continuous enhancement of quality and safety across all functions.

Reporting directly to the Vice President of People, the Executive Director of Health, Wellness, Safety, and Ability Management offers strategic leadership for Island Health's Occupational Health, Safety & Prevention, and Disability Management sectors. This role encompasses safety and prevention initiatives, absence management, and health and wellness programs designed to foster safe work environments and facilitate the safe reintegration of employees following disability claims.

As a key member of the People Leadership team, the Executive Director is responsible for resource coordination, priority advancement, and the implementation of uniform policies within the department. This position also involves monitoring trends in emerging Workplace Health programs and overseeing the quality of service delivery for Island Health's Workplace Health and Call Centre.

The Executive Director will lead the ongoing enhancement of the Health Authority's Health & Safety Management Systems (HSMS) by utilizing resources provided by the Health Authorities and prioritizing initiatives through relevant provincial committees. Additionally, this role represents the Health Authority in collaborative efforts to manage Provincial Workplace Health Services programs and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct the formulation and execution of program service delivery models, business plans, and operational budgets.
  • Oversee designated geographical areas or specific island-wide programs within the Clinical Service Delivery Portfolio.
Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

A Master's Degree in Occupational Health, Business Administration, or a related healthcare discipline is required, along with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in senior management or leadership roles within a large multi-union environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • In-depth knowledge of contemporary practices in injury prevention and occupational health and wellness.

  • Ability to adapt to dynamic environments with initiative.
  • Professional interaction with various levels of staff both internally and externally.
  • Strong understanding of health services and operations, with the physical capability to perform job duties.
