Role Summary:

In alignment with the Vision, Purpose, and Values of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), the safety of patients and staff is paramount and is a collective responsibility. Continuous enhancement of quality and safety is a fundamental expectation of this role.

Reporting directly to the Vice President of People, the Executive Director of Health, Wellness, Safety, and Ability Management offers strategic leadership for Island Health's Occupational Health, Safety & Prevention, and Disability Management sectors, as well as overseeing the provincial workplace health call center. This role encompasses safety and prevention strategies, absence management, and the development of health and wellness initiatives that foster safe and healthy work environments, facilitate employees' safe return from disability claims, and prevent workplace injuries.

As a key member of the People Leadership team, the Executive Director is responsible for resource coordination, priority advancement, and the implementation of standardized policies within the department. This position monitors trends in emerging Workplace Health programs and oversees the quality of service delivery for Island Health's Workplace Health and the Workplace Health Call Centre (WHCC). The Executive Director plays a crucial role in the ongoing enhancement of the Health Authority's Health & Safety Management Systems (HSMS) through collaboration with provincial committees and resources provided by Health Authorities.

The Executive Director leads the formulation and execution of program service delivery models, business plans, priorities, and operational budgets, encompassing human, financial, and physical resources. This role is accountable for a designated geographical area or a set of island-wide programs within the Clinical Service Delivery Portfolio.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

A minimum of a Master's Degree in Occupational Health, Business Administration, or a relevant healthcare discipline, coupled with at least fifteen (15) years of recent, related experience in progressively complex senior management or leadership roles within a large multi-union environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of planning concepts related to budgeting, staffing, occupational health and safety, and strategic initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of contemporary best practices in injury prevention and occupational health and wellness.
  • Proven leadership capabilities.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environments with initiative.
  • Professional interaction skills with various levels of staff, both internally and externally.
  • In-depth knowledge of health services and operations, with the physical ability to perform job duties.
