TERM: ASAP – March 31, 2025 (with possibility of renewal)

JOB DESCRIPTION:
In partnership with the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority, IRTC is offering the Indigenous Health Liaison’s position who will report to the Tribal Nursing Officer. The IRTC Indigenous Health Liaison’s main focus is to provide comprehensive service to First Nation patients and support to Lakeshore General Hospital’s & EM Crowe Memorial Hospital’s medical team in IRTC’s efforts to deliver culturally safe care to First Nation peoples in the Interlake region. Duties include, but not limited to:
• Acts on behalf of the client/families request to problem-solve facility related matters.
• Acts as a translator or arranges interpreters to assist with the exchange of information and understanding in order to make decisions.
• Accompany patients to various hospital service departments in order to interpret procedures and give support.
• Assisting in the planning, developing, evaluating, and reporting of hospital database and preparing medical documents for transfer.
• Assist Indigenous clients/patients with travel arrangements and other personal arrangements as required.
• Attend appropriate health education/in-service sessions in order to improve his/her individual knowledge skills.
• Compiles and coordinates patient feedback and information for physicians/staff members.
• Ensuring respected standards and practices are adhered to regarding legislations, codes, agreements, etc.
• Foster respect for and increased knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, cultural values, and traditional principles of wellness among patients and staff.
• Provide referral support to connect patients and families to culturally safe and traditional healing resources and services.
• Investigates delays in treatment and effectively resolves any patient-physician issues or disputes.
• Understand, interpret, and translate vital information, medical problems and terminology between the client and health care personnel.
QUALIFICATION:
• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent an asset and/or post-secondary education, Health Care Aide certificate, or other related education an asset.
• Counseling or mediation training and experience in the Healthcare setting an asset.
• Exceptional organizational, problem-solving skills.
• Effective written and oral communication skills.
• Knowledge of Indigenous communities, provincial and federal services/policies ie: Indigenous Services Canada
• Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, protocols and traditions and the impact of colonization on the health and well-being of Indigenous individuals and families.
• Must have experience using computers to develop various documents (letters, reports, spreadsheets, databases, etc.)
• Must have a class 5 driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and ability to travel.
• Ability to speak and understand Saulteaux/Ojibway and Cree an asset.
