Position Summary

The School of Biomedical Engineering is a partnership between the Faculties of Medicine and Applied Science. The School is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering; creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. The School is currently responsible for 350+ undergraduate students, 140+ graduate students and 30+ faculty. Over time, the School will be responsible for as many as 400+ undergraduate students, 200+ graduate students and 40+ faculty.

Organizational Status

**Responsibilities**:
The responsibilities of the position depend on the skills and research interests of the successful applicant. Specific tasks for this position may include:

- Plan, troubleshoot, and execute experiments, in particular prototyping and proof of principle experiments, often relating to high-throughput measurements of regulatory DNA activity
- Perform literature searches relating to things they are working on
- Writing papers relating to their work
- Assisting other lab members with their experiments
- Helping to train new and existing lab members
- Working with other lab members to plan experiments
- Working as part of a team to complete complex experiments
- Other duties as required

Supervision received

The incumbent will receive supervision by the Principal investigator, Dr. Carl de Boer.

Supervision given

The incumbent may be required to supervise research assistants and trainees involved in the research program.

**Qualifications**:

- Minimum 8 years of experience with strong background in molecular biology and genetics
- Assistance with manuscript and report writing
- Demonstrated ability to work with others in a team environment
- Excellent communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to deliver presentations and present information clearly and concisely
Fungal culture, genetic manipulation, especially _S. cerevisiae_
Transgenics and genome engineering
DNA synthesis experience via random processes
Experience optimizing DNA synthesis
Transcriptomics (both computational and experimental)
High-throughput sequencing
Genetic element design
Capability of independently designing, conducting and interpreting experimental work with the goal of publication
Ability to analyse and interpret data, in particular non-standard analyses
Knowledge of R, Python or any other programming language
Demonstrated desire for learning, continual improvement, and trying new things
