**The opportunity**:
The University of Manitoba is looking for an Academic Advisor. This position will be responsible for providing advice on a variety of academic matters to current and prospective students, approves or denies requests for deferred examinations and request for Letters of Permission. The Academic Advisor will also assists with academic assessment and design, updates and revised office forms and form letters.

**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:

- A University Bachelors degree is required.
- A degree in the social sciences or helping profession is preferred.
- Two years of directly related academic advising experience involving first-year undergraduate students is required.
- A thorough knowledge of student services offered on the Fort Garry U of M campus and familiarity with the Fort Garry U of M campus is preferred.
- Experience making public presentations and/or teaching experience is required.
- Demonstrate knowledge of theory relevant to academic advising.
- Ability to understand academic advising approaches and strategies, including articulation of a personal philosophy of academic advising.
- Facilitation of individual, and group, problem solving, decision-making, planning and goal setting.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics, needs and experiences of first-year students.
- Ability to employ culturally inclusive active listening techniques including paraphrasing, reflecting and asking open-ended questions for the purpose of clarity and rapport building.
- Articulation of messages effectively and professionally, in one-on-one and group settings
- Ability to choose and utilize appropriate technology to enhance communications and demonstration of adaptability in the face of fast-paced technological change.
- Demonstrate empathy: perceive, evaluate and effectively respond to emotions in others; show sensitivity and understand others perspectives.
- Must be able to contribute to a positive team culture within and outside of the unit, including working collaboratively with others and paying attention to how the team supports its members.
- Support students to build skills related to social connection, resilience, coping, personal capacity for health and other dimensions of well-being.
- Demonstrate adequate understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of another culture in relation to history, values, religion, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices.
- Use of inclusive, respectful language in all communication.
- Ability to identify when, and with whom to implement appropriate crisis management and intervention responses, including awareness of campus resources and processes.
- Ability to maintain an appropriate degree of confidentiality that follows applicable legal requirements, facilitates development of trusting relationships, and recognizes when confidentiality should be broken to protect the student or others.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
