**PURPOSE & SUMMARY**
Sumas First Nation (SFN) requires the services of a Engagement & Communications Assistant for the Sumas First Nation Legacy Project. The Legacy project aims to develop a community-informed understanding of, and solutions for, historical issues on Sumas First Nation Lands that arose from the actions and omissions of Canada during the colonial administration of our lands under the Indian Act. This position will be a member of the Lands Department while also working closely with the SFN Governance and Natural Resources Department. The duties of this position include being the first point of contact for Legacy issue clients to understand their immediate needs and identify opportunities. This role will also schedule, engage, communicate, collect, and interpret data that is collected as the project progresses.
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Assist the SFN Lands Manager in overall communications and administrative tasks, including:
- Booking venues, ordering catering, event planning and logistics, etc.;
- Booking and organizing meetings with Legacy partners, including government agencies, legal counsel, professional support, SFN Leadership and related SFN entities, staff and membership, and SFN non-member residents;
- Invoicing, payment and budget support as needed;
- Note taking and minute taking, action-item tracking and follow-up;
- Gather, research, and prepare communication material for internal and external audiences, including content for the SFN newsletter and social media;
- Work with SFN Communications Officer to create promotional materials like posters, brochures, and social media posts;
- Assist in the development and implementation of appropriate communication for print or electronic media;
- Assist with qualitative records management including document management, summary and transcription of oral legacy consultations with SFN knowledge keepers, members and residents; cataloguing consultation record; transcribing interviews, etc.;
- Assist the SFN Lands Manager in developing and implementing an Engagement Strategy for the Legacy Project, including:
- Identifying regular meeting locations, approaches, and support with membership and non-member residents;
- Assisting in building awareness and knowledge of Legacy projects amongst SFN members and residents, as well as pathways and options for moving forward towards the resolution of Legacy issues;
- Building meaningful relations with members and residents, focus on each client experience and making every interaction meaningful;
- Connecting clients to the right team members within the SFN Lands Department or partners who can assist with Legacy-related issues;
- Assist the SFN Lands Manager in conducting, analysing, interpreting and reporting on Legacy-related data collection, including reviewing historic documents, conducting and transcribing interviews and engagement sessions;
- Assisting in the preparation of reports and research summaries to the SFN Lands Manager and Leadership as requested;
- Participate in field research to record and understand SFN Legacy issues;
- Support intergovernmental meetings and other stakeholder engagements as part of Legacy Issues resolution;
- Attend required research and professional training on an as-needed basis;
- Research, gather, organize, and identify gaps in the historical information utilizing the First Nation Lands Registry;
- Provide logístical support in both workplace and during field site visits.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Knowledge and respect of Sumas First Nation’s social structure, traditions, values, culture, traditional territory, resources, protocols, and policies;
- Familiarity with Stó:lō First Nation and Sumas First Nation perspectives in relation to Resource Management is an asset;
- Sensitivity towards culturally appropriate and respectful practices involving the gathering and handling of historical information and engaging with elders, knowledge holders, and those affected by Legacy issues in the SFN community;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy as set out within the Legacy project;
- Experience using creative apps for the purpose of social media and other visual content creation considered an asset;
- Effective organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Ability to maintain a good working relationship with co-workers, consultants and other stakeholders;
- Strong communication (verbally and written) and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to be innovative, work independently while remaining accountable to work plan priorities, and as part of a team with mínimal supervision;
