The duties and responsibilities of Department Chair are laid out in detail in article 26.1.E. of the Faculty Association Collective Agreement.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- providing academic and administrative leadership in (but not limited to) teaching and learning, and SRC;
- developing and delivering the undergraduate and graduate curricula and programs;
- creating a fair, equitable, inclusive and supportive environment for student learning and engagement; supporting faculty involvement in scholarly, research and creative activity;
- stewardship of the human and financial resources of the Department;
- representing the Department in the University and acting as a liaison with the profession and community;
- facilitating a collegial, interactive environment nurturing the best qualities and achievements of all students, faculty and staff;
- overseeing the implementation of the University’s equity, diversity and inclusion priorities and initiatives within the Department;
- providing advocacy and leadership for the Department;
- inspiring the engagement of its members to maintain excellence in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education teaching.
- academic leadership based on deep respect to the colleagues and collegiality;
- an excellent record of scholarly or creative activities and comparable professional accomplishments;
- facilitation of an atmosphere where student learning, faculty research, and creative activities can flourish;
- a commitment to upholding the values of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities;
- highly developed communication and organizational skills;
- the ability for strategic planning and its implementation;
- relevant knowledge and skills in academic and administrative leadership;
- experience with university teaching, curriculum development, excellent pedagogical practices and student engagement.
