Compensation Range

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

Job Summary

Organizational Status

Work Performed
- Review and negotiate budgets to ensure feasibility and sustainability to meet program needs
- Adhere to university, hospital granting agency, and sponsor policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and ensure funds are expended in compliance with guidelines
- Manage research grants for multiple Principal Investigators
- Prepare monthly and/or quarterly accounts summary for the Directors, Principal Investigators, as well as any reports needed for granting agencies
- Develop and monitor internal controls to ensure financial risks are mitigated, including implementation of a quality management system
- Identify problems or discrepancies, analyze and interpret information to determine root cause and take corrective action for problem resolution, and implement preventive actions for future reoccurrence
- Forecast and analyze the Program’s operational costs to ensure short-term resourcing and long-term sustainability
- Advise the Program on financial resource strategic planning and budgeting
- Meet regularly with the Directors, Principal Investigators, and research team to establish objectives and priorities; develop and recommend financial models, plans, and strategies to improve program operations
- Provide strategic financial analysis to support clinical trials with regular updates, including a review of revenue, expenses, and liabilities to be presented to the Directors and Principal Investigators
- Oversee confidential and sensitive financial documents that have significant budgetary impacts, including protection of confidential patient information
- Provide senior confidential financial and administrative advice to the Program
- Carry out any other financial and administrative duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position

Consequence of Error/Judgment

Errors in judgment may impact the long-term operational activities of the clinical and research programs. Inappropriate decisions or poor management and control could have serious impact on the program. Failure to meet objectives may result in loss of credibility to the university, hospital health authority, and local and international sponsors.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Completion of at least 7 of the 14 CPA academic prerequisites. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Experience in clinical and research program operations
- Knowledge of budgeting principles, financial planning, and general business practices
- Familiarity with UBC procedures, policies, and systems including Workday
- Detail-oriented and have excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information
- Basic proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Ability to exercise sound judgment at all times
- Ability to research, analyze, interpret, and come to an appropriate conclusion
- Ability to foster an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Ability to analyze, manage, and reconcile budgets
- Ability to build consensus and manage without authority
