**ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW**:
University Settlement is a multi-service agency that was founded in 1910 and has the distinction of being the first community-based social service centre in the City of Toronto. University Settlement’s three offices are part of culturally rich and vibrant neighborhoods in downtown Toronto and North York. With a full-time and part-time staff of approximately 150, University Settlement has developed programs to address the needs of more than 8,000 users annually through diverse areas such as settlement services, English language classes, senior services, youth programming, music and arts education, and licensed daycare. In addition, our main site hosts a full recreation centre with a swimming pool, gymnasium, and fitness centre.

**THE POSITION**:
The Community Development Worker is a seasonal full-time summer position in the Recreation Aquatics Department is a youth employment initiative open to applicants ages 15-29 years old. This position will assist in coordinating the administration, planning, organization, and operation of our Aquatic programs, ensuring compliance with regulations, and fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all participants. Their primary responsibilities include assisting with planning aquatics activities and executing the daily operations of the aquatics, such as leading swimming lessons activities as scheduled, ensuring the health and safety of the children and adults participating in the swim program, and communicating with staff, volunteers, and parents/guardians. The Community Development Worker collaborates closely with the University Settlement recreation department to uphold organizational policies and procedures. In addition to these core duties, they will support initiatives such as coordinating the National Drowning Prevention Week activities and organizing special events like our annual Grange Festival.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Assist in coordinating the administration, planning, organization, training, and operation of Aquatic programs.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, health regulations, and organizational policies. Execute emergency procedures and maintain safety standards using appropriate equipment.
- Help facilitate recreational programs and be ready in as needed to fulfill duties such as serving as a swim instructor or assisting with recreation activities.
- Ensure facilities are appropriately equipped and maintained for program activities. Report any concerns to the supervisor promptly.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and qualifications are maintained. Monitor staff performance and provide support as needed.
- Oversee the planning and implementation of special events such as the annual Grange Festival and National Drowning Prevention Week.
- Work with other agencies and community groups to develop programs based on community needs.
- Outreach to local community via social media and promotional materials.
- Coordinate staff training initiatives to enhance skills and knowledge in emergency procedures and program delivery.
- Administrative work as needed (taking attendance, promotion, filing paperwork, client registration, etc.).
- Assist with end-of-season reports, evaluations, and clean-up.
- Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Post-secondary education in Education, Recreation & Leisure or equivalent experience.
- 1-3 years of experience working with children in a group setting with demonstrated supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively facilitate high-quality in-person programs for participants and lead teams.
- Strong organizational skills, able to work on multiple tasks effectively.
- Able to work effectively as a team player.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Excellent problem-solving and customer service skills.
- HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD), Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED, National Lifeguard, Swim Instructor certification.

**SCHEDULE**:*Wednesday to Friday 10:00AM-6:00PM, Saturday and Sunday 9:00AM-5:00PM

**DETAILS**:Based on 35 hours per week, contract seasonal full-time, 8 weeks

**Expected started date**: Week of June 24th, 2024

**SALARY RANGE**: $25.62/hour

**TERMS**: Police References Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening satisfactory to University Settlement is a requirement of this position.
