Recreation Assistant

Royal Oak Senior Living is a 103 suite Retirement Community located in the beautiful St. Thomas, Ontario. Our goal is to provide a welcoming and comforting home for our residents where they can flourish and enjoy all that life has to offer.
**Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Manager of Recreation, the Recreation Assistant will join a team that is focused on the recreation and leisure needs of our residents at Royal Oak. The Recreation Assistant will develop, implement and evaluate individual, small and large group programs to ensure they meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and cognitive needs of our residents. The Recreation Assistant will have the following responsibilities:
- Assists with the volunteer program, including orientation, motivation and development of the volunteers.
- Plan, organize and submit for approval a monthly activity schedule offering a variety of activities, crafts, fitness programs, sensory, outings and events.
- Creates an enjoyable, relaxed and entertaining environment in the residence and assumes responsibility for the morale and well-being of residents.
- Plan and organize individualized life enrichment programs for residents.
- Communicate with each and every resident on a regular basis.
- Assists to plan, organize, write and publish a newsletter containing a variety of articles and information for distribution to the residents and their families.
- Maintain positive relationships with community organizations.
- Participate in conferences and instructional courses.
- Be aware and react to special needs including but not limited to:
- Tuck shop
- Arts and crafts
- Music events
- Fund raising
- Cocktail bar
- Regular parties
- Exercises
- Cooking
- Community events
- Educational functions
- Library services
- Therapeutic recreation
- Qualifications:
- A community college diploma/university degree in recreation/activation or a university degree in psychology, sociology or gerontology plus a certificate in recreation/activation is required.
- Previous employment in a health care (long term care or Retirement) setting an asset.
- Demonstrated understanding of empathy for the needs of seniors.
- Be able to read, write and comfortably communicate in English.
- Able to perform physical work.
- Fun to be with, organized, sensitive, enthusiastic, patient, tactful and mature.
- Must be able to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, volunteers, residents and families.
- Experience in planning, organizing and managing events is an asset.
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Certification in Smart Serve and Food Handler's
- Driver’s license required, with good driving record (past three years) and may also require a bus license.
