The Mental Health Assistant commits to and promotes safety practices that mitigate real and potential harm to patients and others. The Mental Health Assistant will support the clinical unit with non-clinical needs in consultation and collaboration with the health care team by supporting day to day patient care activities, supporting transfers and discharges, maintaining safety and cleanliness, patient room turnovers, laundry, maintaining supplies and materials. This may also include organizing, supervising and encouraging patient populations in social, educational and recreational activities as part of structured therapy.

The Mental Health Assistant position is a key member of the team, by supporting exceptional, timely and safe care to our patients. The Mental Health Assistant must provide day to day support to patients, while monitoring patients in order to detect unusual behavior. This is partially done so by effectively monitoring and de-escalating members of the unit’s patient population. The Mental Health Assistant is required to assist with patient belonging searches and actively respond to Emergency Code situations.

**HOURS**:
**SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED**:

- Direct and recently demonstrated experience in understanding needs, support and day to day behaviours and/or challenges of mental health and addiction patient population is required
- Direct and recently demonstrated experience effectively de-escalating a member of the mental health and addiction patient population is required
- Experience directly responding to patient care Emergency Code situations and intervening in order to mitigate potential harm to patients, employees, volunteers, students, contract workers, visitors and medical staff is required
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working in hospital setting
- Experience working with a mental health population is preferred
- Current certificate of completion of Crisis Intervention training (Clinical with Pinels) is required.
- Effective positive interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, tact and diplomacy at all times
- Ability to work well independently and in a collaborative team environment with mínimal supervision
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, and to critically think and prioritize workload
- Demonstrate flexibility within roles and responsibilities with the ability to adapt to changes in assignment throughout a shift
- Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to patient and staff safety.
- Resiliency and an ability to adapt and work within a constantly changing environment.
- Basic computer skills (Outlook, Cerner, etc.)
- Working knowledge of WHMIS, Infection Control, Health and Safety, and Waste Management Protocols
- Excellent attendance record in accordance with STEGH’s Attendance at Work Program required
- Demonstrated acceptable performance record in alignment with STEGH's Mission, Vision, Values and Code of Conduct
- Physical ability to perform moderate heavy work.
