Veterinary Assistant

The Veterinary Assistant (ACA) in the ICU/ER at WAVES provides essential support to ensure the well-being and recovery of animals receiving critical care. As an integral member of the ICU/ER team, you will work closely with our emergency and critical care specialist and ICU RVTs to deliver high-quality animal care and maintain a safe and clean environment for our most critical patients.
**Responsibilities**:
- Assist in providing care to animals in the ICU, ensuring their physical and medical needs are met. This includes feeding, husbandry, monitoring, and assisting with medical procedures or treatments under veterinary supervision as required.
- Monitor patients closely and record vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. Report any changes and abnormalities to the ICU team promptly.
- Provide comfort and companionship to patients by ensuring bedding is clean and comfortable and providing enrichment, handling and interaction.
- Maintain a clean and hygienic environment in the ICU by regularly cleaning cages, kennels, surfaces, and equipment.
- Assist in accurately maintaining medical records, including recording patient information, treatments administered, observation notes, and any changes in condition. Ensure all documentation is complete within the electronic medical record and filed appropriately.
- Assist in the proper maintenance and cleaning of medical equipment, such as ventilator, IV pumps, syringe pumps, and monitoring equipment. Notify appropriate personnel of any malfunctions or any equipment in need of repair.
- Collaborate effectively with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other support staff to coordinate patient care, share information, and provide updates on patient status or concerns.
- Maintain open and professional communication with clients, providing updates on their pet's condition as directed by the veterinary team.
Schedule:
The ICU ACA will be scheduled for three 12 hour shifts a week, Sunday to Tuesday 8am to 8pm. If there is a critical care patient, then the ICU ACA may be required to work additional hours outside of their regular schedule to care for this patient.
The ICU ACA's primary responsibility is to the ICU; however, they are also expected to provide assistance in the ER and across other hospital departments as needed. This role requires flexibility and collaboration, offering support to other services during times when ICU workload allows for it and another department requires additional help
