- 1. General
- The incumbent of this position is directly responsible to the Operations Supervisor and is required to provide handyperson (carpentry, painting, general maintenance, and production) services for the Operational Services Department activities. This position is frequently required to work with limited supervision and possess initiative and good judgement.- 2. Typical Duties
- A. Priority 1: Maintenance
- To maintain galleries and temporary exhibit spaces at the Museum’s specified service delivery standard that ensures a positive visitor experience.
- Perform general maintenance functions related to cabinetry/exhibitry, walls and barriers, lighting, and signage in museum galleries and public spaces.
- Assist persons in other trade areas related to permanent galleries and Planetarium when required.
- Assist in the maintenance of temporary and travelling exhibits.
- Assist in the handling and installation of artifacts in Museum Galleries and temporary and travelling exhibits.

To maintain common areas and staff working environments to a high standard.
- Addressing visitor and employee concerns/requests as they relate to the condition of the facility.
- Assist in the coordination of work with the landlord.
- Assist in the development of practices that improve the organization’s operations.

B. Priority 2: Support on Various Projects/Exhibits
- To assist Operations staff with the tasks associated with refurbishment of existing exhibits, development and fabrication of new exhibits and Fee for Service Projects.
- i. Assist tradespeople with carpentry
- ii. Assist tradespeople with low-voltage electrical- iv. Assist in the preparation of artifact and specimen mounts
- v. Participate in meetings related to exhibit development
- C. Priority 3: Internal Customer Service
- To provide service to internal customers to ensure the fulfilment of the Museum Mission.
- Assist with the setup of staging, tables and chairs related to Facility Rentals.
- Assist with deliveries for internal customers.
- Assist with the moving of furniture and other heavy items and materials.
- Provide the necessary lighting effects for Museum Galleries and temporary and travelling exhibits.
- Assist in the maintenance of equipment.
- Assist persons in the trades area and Conservation/Collections Department when required.
- May assist in research projects to identify new and/or improved techniques in the production process.

D. Other duties as reasonably assigned.
- MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1. Skills, Abilities and Knowledge
- i. Practical knowledge of procedures, crafts, equipment and materials related to painting.
- ii. General knowledge of materials, techniques and equipment in the trades area.
- iii. General knowledge of lighting techniques utilized in Museum exhibits.
- iv. Good knowledge of the handling and installation of Museum artifacts.
- v. Work cooperatively with co-workers, and ability to organize own work schedule.
- vi. Ability to work independently and in an organized manner.
- vii. Able to lift 50 lbs. weight
- viii. Good knowledge of material handling equipment and procedures, e.g. use of pallet jacks and dollies
- 2. Education, Training and Experience
- i. High School Education or equivalent, and
- ii. At least three years of related experience, or
- iii. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
