The Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables delivers leadership in the management and responsible development of the Province's mineral resource assets along with scientific support of public health and safety through regional mapping, water resource, and hazard mapping programs. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes a team of expert geoscientists who are responsible for delivering high quality, timely geoscience data, information, services, and support to a wide range of stakeholders, including all levels of government, industry, academia, and the public.

About Our Opportunity

The Geologist 4 is responsible for applied, high quality, field-based research and activities to:
improve our understanding of the bedrock geology in the province.
complete the provincial bedrock mapping project

You will be responsible for producing a comprehensive updated provincial bedrock map. You will utilize advanced mapping tools, GIS software, and other technological solutions to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of bedrock mapping activities.

This position reports to the Manager of Project Operations with the Geological Survey Division

Primary Accountabilities

**Specific duties of this position include**:
Designing, executing, and managing an advanced geoscience mapping project as Lead, with the goal of increasing our knowledge of the provincial bedrock geology and producing an updated Nova Scotia bedrock geology map. This includes detailed project budgeting, scheduling, reporting, administration, and deliverables.
Mapping, core logging, petrographic examination, lithogeochemical and micro-analytical examination of bedrock geology.
Collecting, interpreting, and integrating detailed, timely, high-quality bedrock mapping data to construct bedrock maps of the province at both local and regional scales.
Publishing other high-quality, timely and relevant geoscience products with an emphasis on scientific / technical publications.
Supervising students and project collaborators during field programs and project activities.
Assist as internal and external collaborator, and provides input to priority-setting, project design and to program planning with other government and non-government agencies.
Consulting with management regarding broad program objectives, long term Division goals, and program evaluation.
Participating in other activities including Branch outreach presentations and publications, engaging senior management on topics related to bedrock geology, and participating on internal and/or intergovernmental committees.
Ensuring that work is performed in accordance with health and safety standards and other government workplace policies and directives.

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you specialize and have extensive experience in bedrock mapping and geological surveying. You must have a degree in Earth Science or Geoscience, with emphasis on knowledge in several areas including structural geology, sedimentology and stratigraphy, mineralogy, field geology, GIS, geochemistry and geomorphology plus 7 years of related experience; or a Masters of Science plus 6 years of related experience; Ph.D. plus 4 years of related experience.

To be successful in this role, you must exercise a high degree of scientific skill and judgement in planning and carrying out geological mapping projects, have highly developed oral and writing communication skills, as well as possess and maintain a highly respected and authoritative position within your field of specialization. You will also have strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills along with a passion for field work. Computer skills with experience in using office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and GIS (ESRI suite of products preferred) are important.
