About Our Opportunity

The Government of Nova Scotia is seeking a highly skilled Geologist 4 to join our team in the Geological Survey Division. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and executing field-based geological mapping and surveys to collect, interpret, and publish scientific data and detailed information on the bedrock geology of the province.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, execute, and manage advanced geoscience mapping projects to increase our knowledge of the provincial bedrock geology and produce an updated Nova Scotia bedrock geology map.
  • Map, core log, petrographically examine, and conduct lithogeochemical and micro-analytical examinations of bedrock geology.
  • Collect, interpret, and integrate detailed, timely, high-quality bedrock mapping data to construct bedrock maps of the province at both local and regional scales.
  • Publish high-quality, timely, and relevant geoscience products with an emphasis on scientific/technical publications.
  • Supervise students and project collaborators during field programs and project activities.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams, providing input to priority-setting, project design, and program planning.
  • Consult with management regarding broad program objectives, long-term division goals, and program evaluation.
  • Participate in Branch outreach presentations and publications, engaging senior management on topics related to bedrock geology, and participating on internal and/or intergovernmental committees.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with health and safety standards and other government workplace policies and directives.
Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you specialize and have extensive experience in bedrock mapping and geological surveying. You must have a degree in Earth Science or Geoscience, with emphasis on knowledge in several areas including structural geology, sedimentology, and stratigraphy, mineralogy, field geology, GIS, geochemistry, and geomorphology, plus 7 years of related experience; or a Master's of Science plus 6 years of related experience; plus 4 years of related experience.

Candidates must possess advanced knowledge of geoscience and the geology of Nova Scotia. You must have a proven record over several years of consistent high-level productivity and achievement, and peer recognition as demonstrated by a record of designing and executing successful field programs and the publication of scientific and technical reports and maps.

To be successful in this role, you must exercise a high degree of scientific skill and judgment in planning and carrying out geological mapping projects, have highly developed oral and writing communication skills, as well as possess and maintain a highly respected and authoritative position within your field of specialization. You will also have strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills, along with a passion for field work. Computer skills with experience in using office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and GIS (ESRI suite of products preferred) are important.

This position requires a high degree of self-motivation and professional independence and the ability to work with minimum supervision, as well as demonstrated ability to collaborate with and effectively supervise, advise, and/or assist other scientists. The ideal candidate will have the ability to mentor others in a professional and respectful manner while providing opportunities for professional growth. You must be able to work within the local academic community, which would have specific knowledge and experience in the bedrock geology of the province.

The successful candidate must be registered with Geoscientists Nova Scotia or be immediately eligible for registration. You must possess a valid Class 5 driver's license.

Having experience with the current state of research on the geology of the northeastern Appalachians would be considered an asset.
