Invasive Species Technician

**Position Description**

The position is responsible for assisting natural lands staff in implementing plant community restoration programs and the installation and maintenance of wildlife mitigation fencing. The position will primarily involve activities in the forest and meadow areas of the nature sanctuaries. The work will primarily be hand removal of invasive plant species in sensitive habitats, fence installation, and data reporting.

This position requires working a minimum 35 hour work week, including evenings and weekends as required, with selected projects influenced by weather conditions. The sites include steep forested ravines and the Niagara Escarpment. Activities are focused outdoors but include both indoor and outdoor work in most weather conditions and environments.

**Tasks and Responsibilities**
- Manual removal of non-native invasive trees and shrubs using various tools.
- Installation and maintenance of wildlife mitigation fencing (Animex Wildlife Fencing).
- Coordinating volunteer days.
- Supervising volunteers, including co-op students.
- Reporting on invasive plant removal activities.
- Assisting with other restoration activities (tree planting, seed collection, seed cleaning etc.).

**Qualifications**

The individual should have the minimum qualifications and skills:

- Post-secondary degree in the Environmental field.
- Field skills in plant and wildlife identification including specific knowledge invasive species both widespread and emerging in Southern Ontario.
- Previous experience managing invasive species an asset.
- Experience in the operation of equipment such as shrub pullers, tree girdlers, hand saws and Gator utility vehicles an asset.
- Ability to navigate using aerial photos and GPS unit.
- Comfortable managing and directing volunteers and engaging with the public.
- Positive team player.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Access, and GIS software.
- Knowledge of local geography, hydrology, flora and fauna.
- Ability to do heavy physical labour.
- Familiar with relevant legislation
- Standard First Aid.
- Familiar with roadside wildlife barriers Best Management Practices.

**Working Conditions**:

- This position requires working a minimum 35 hour work week, including evenings and weekends as required as selected projects are influenced by weather conditions.
- Physically demanding outdoor work in variable weather conditions (rain, heat, insects) and hilly terrain.

**Eligibility**:
In order to be eligible for the position the applicant must meet the following criteria:

- Legally entitled to work in Canada; this includes Permanent Residents and persons granted refugee status in Canada.
- Possess a valid class G drivers license and a clear Statement of Driving Record.
- Be able to start work in Sept 2023.
