Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Reforestation Technical Lead, this position is responsible for assisting with the planning and implementing of reforestation projects with interested watershed landowners. This position also works closely with the Restoration Technical Leads and Restoration Field Technicians to support implementation of a broad range of ecological restoration opportunities across the watershed on public and private lands. Specific duties include:

  • Assist the Reforestation Technical Lead to deliver the tree planting program and reforestation initiatives on Conservation Halton, municipal and private lands
  • Conduct site visits and field surveys to develop planting plans and/or recommendations to create or enhance forest cover and habitat across the watershed; perform survival assessments on plantings
  • Support the preparation and administration of contracts related to tree planting and reforestation activities.
  • Support administration of annual tree planting budget including invoicing and preparing financial reporting information.
  • Collaborate with landowners, staff or other agencies, and the public
  • Provide input to preparing funding proposals for tree planting and reforestation projects
  • Assist with the collection and analysis of forest management and reforestation information, including invasive species, habitat assessments and restoration opportunities
  • Assist in the preparation of maps/reports on technical and/or field conditions
  • Adhere to health and safety policies, operating, procedures for equipment and wear appropriate PPE
  • Mobilize, transport, use and maintain all tools and equipment in a safe manner
  • Participate in the seed collection program
Your Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of related forestry work experience and a degree or post-secondary education in forestry, resource management or related field
  • Experience working with landowners to develop tree planting plans
  • Knowledge of tree planting procedures, silvics, and terrestrial ecosystems
  • Strong understanding of equipment employed by contractors for reforestation and competent in the use of equipment for tree planting
  • Experience with tree inventories, survival assessments and field collection applications
  • Seed Collector Certification and Ontario Pesticide Training and Certification are considered assets
  • Training and experience in reforestation principles and approaches, project management and application of project management tools and techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario's tree and shrub species, habitat preferences, invasive species, and identification skills
  • Experience in assessing site conditions and preparing tree planting plans
  • Experience with planting equipment operation and tools
