Burlington, Canada Royal Botanical Gardens Full time

Working with representatives of the Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark System partner agencies, a coalition of nine not-for-profit or government agencies owning and managing approximately 2,000 ha of natural areas at the western end of Lake Ontario, the Indigenous Engagement Coordinator will help the participating agencies and the Indigenous community explore and pilot projects and protocols that address managing the land in this urban natural area. The alliance of partners hopes that these projects will, over time, support reconciliation with local First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, and help us build connections to the natural world by increasing awareness and incorporating Indigenous ways of teaching/knowing.

Reporting to the EcoPark System Coordinator and supported by the management committee of the alliance, the Coordinator will be responsible for interacting with Indigenous communities and exploring their interest in contribution to the pilot program, including possibly through participating in seed collecting and planting native plant species, removal of invasive species, and developing partnerships and protocols that respect and respond to Indigenous Traditional Knowledge. RBG as the Implementing partner and employer of record will also provide support for this position.

The EcoPark System alliance is a unique opportunity to better serve Indigenous and settler communities, with a long-term goal to develop new ideas and projects in the post-pilot period (after 2023) that will be of interest and help the Indigenous communities and the participating agencies to address their respective interests in the land.

Description of the Role

The position is for an experienced and knowledgeable First Nations advisor who can work with the participating agencies, volunteers, and other interested community members to:

- Develop and recommend policies and procedures for Indigenous relations related to the ecological corridors pilot project, culture, and ways of knowing. This involves the identification of needs, development of specific initiatives on specific properties in partnership with the participating agencies as land managers, and monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the pilot program,
- Explore and make recommendations regarding building capacity for land-based Indigenous engagement, and for exploring opportunities for greater cultural competency by creating spaces - physically, and in process and policy - for ceremony, teaching, and community to build awareness and understanding of traditional ways of knowing,
- Recording the experiences and results of the pilot program on Indigenous engagement in a form that can be used to guide future program development,
- Participate in implementing on-the-ground projects within the overall ecological corridors pilot project planned for 2023-2024, such as ecological restoration projects on individual partner properties, and exploring/inviting Indigenous participation in these projects with respective interested Indigenous communities, and
- Promote and develop positive relationships with Indigenous community leaders, community members, researchers, and other relevant partners interested in this area as an ecological and cultural landscape.
- Review program documentation and reports from the perspective of the Indigenous community, and engage community members in providing feedback on the progress of the program.

Employment Conditions

The Indigenous Engagement Coordinator will work remotely most days, but space is available for the occasional use of a desk at RBG Centre. Support will be arranged for communications and infrastructure as needed to allow for effective work from home. Frequent travel within Hamilton and Burlington and local Indigenous Communities to consult with participating groups or visit restoration sites should be expected. Outside work at restoration sites throughout the year should be expected.

**Qualifications**:

- 5+ years of progressive experience and relevant experience working in Indigenous Relations
- Demonstrable experience working and/or understanding Indigenous communities and Traditional ecological knowledge
- Strong collaborative skills for engaging, working closely, and demonstrating the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders to develop and fulfill the goals of the program
- Experience with program development and delivering educational and presentation materials on Indigenous issues
- Experience providing advice and preparing materials for publication, documentation, and testimony at public meetings, debates, and other Indigenous Relations program activities
- Excellent oral communications skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the organization and externally at all levels and interact with others collaboratively and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experiences, and styles
- Excellent writing skills; ability to compile information, pre
