Remote, Canada Aftermetoo Full time

Aftermetoo is a young, small, and growing national Canadian charity that emerged out of the 2017 global #MeToo movement. This year, we’re launching a project to develop online communities where people who are experiencing gender-based workplace harassment can come together to support and help each other.

We are looking for a community lead to support the communities and carry out activities designed to support member engagement and retention. That’s the purpose of your job: engagement and retention.

**Position overview**

The person doing this job does not need to be an expert in workplace sexual harassment nor are they expected to provide mental health support to people who have experienced trauma. They are purely expected to act in a facilitative and supportive fashion, encouraging people to stay and benefit from the community, and helping the community develop in a way that works well for its members.

**Responsibilities**

The main responsibility of this role is to support the communities and carry out activities designed to support member engagement and retention. Here’s the kind of work you’ll do:

- Review and absorb Aftermetoo research documents related to people’s experiences of workplace sexual harassment, and become familiar with their informational and community needs.
- Review and learn the resources available at Aftermetoo’s website and figure out ways to make them accessible and engaging for community members.
- Facilitate discussions to help the community determine its norms, standards, and practices, and document and uphold those practices.
- Moderate the community to uphold standards, remove spam, stop harassment, ban disruptive users, and respond to member questions and requests.
- Develop and execute a calendar of activities designed to engage community members, such as discussion prompts, polls, surveys, and other interactive content.
- Organize and host events such as AMA-style expert Q&A sessions, contests, and challenges.
- Promote the Aftermetoo community to people at other places online where people are discussing similar topics, by sharing Aftermetoo resources and events there.
- Pay attention to what community members seem to want (and actively solicit their feedback and ideas) and do your best to steer the community in directions that seem maximally helpful to members.
- Identify nascent/potential community leadership and create space for them to lead.

**Skills and qualifications**
- Experience moderating online communities (forums, Facebook groups, mailing lists, subreddits, etc.). Unpaid/volunteer experience is fine.
- Solid familiarity with the types of platforms that support community discussions (e.g., Reddit, Discord, X Spaces, Facebook Groups, WhatsApp Groups, Tumblr, Twitch, Mastodon).
- Experience with digital content creation for social media or other platforms.
- Solid understanding of how to engage people to support them having fun, learning, and growing.
- Experience facilitating discussions, either online or offline.
- Experience resolving disputes.
- Experience recruiting and/or coordinating the work of volunteers.
- Experience working with (or helping/supporting) people aged 25-35 who are female and/or queer.
- Ability to communicate clearly and warmly in text.
- It would be great if you have experience with open source and/or free culture principles and practices.

**Personal qualities and characteristics**
- You’re patient, understanding, and diplomatic.
- You have a strong desire to support people in achieving personal growth.
- You like documenting and sharing information.
- You’re responsive and able to make decisions under time pressure.
- You are good at resolving conflict, and are okay to be firm even if it means being disliked.
- You’re flexible. You like seeking feedback and adapting and changing direction based on what you learn.

**Pay and work hours**
- We have $125,000 budgeted for this position for a period of 18 months.
- We do not offer conventional benefits.
- You’ll be expected to provide your own devices (laptop, phone).
- We’ll figure out together what hours are best for this position, but it definitely won’t be 9-5. We’ll likely want you to regularly work evenings and possibly occasionally do some weekend work.

**Commitment to Equity**

At Aftermetoo, we know that diverse groups make better decisions and produce higher-quality work. We are actively seeking to build a diverse team for this project along multiple axes, including but not limited to gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic background.

**How to apply**

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for consideration will be contacted.

**Job Type**: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 18 months

Pay: $83,333.00 per year

**Benefits**:

- Casual dress
- Flexible schedule
- Work from home

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday

Work Location: Remote

Expected start date: 2024-08-01
