Position overview:
Reporting to the Head of Corporate Affairs, the Corporate Strategic Lead, Government Relations develops the City’s strategic approach to government relations, which is inclusive of advocacy with senior levels of government to help advance identified strategic City priorities and influence public policy on issues impacting residents, businesses and City operations; identifying and helping secure funding opportunities for identified strategic priorities and projects; and monitoring and reporting on changes to legislation/regulations, policies and key parliamentary activities and their impact on and opportunities for the City. The job is responsible for developing and fostering strong relationships between the City and senior levels of government and municipal associations.

Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for:
- The development and regular updating of the City’s strategically aligned government relations work plan.- Leading the development of annual and ad-hoc advocacy priorities and action plans that are in keeping with the City’s strategic plan Vision 2040 and From Vision to Focus.- Identifying opportunities to influence the development of public policies at the regional, provincial, and federal levels.- Coordinating and formulating strategies to assist and/or lead with the preparation of resolutions, reports, letters, delegation meetings, pre-budget submissions and required briefing notes.- Providing intergovernmental advocacy advice and support for Council and senior leadership as well as providing strategic information on the latest legislative policy and issues.- Coordinating the City’s response to provincial and federal consultations.- Identifying advocacy priorities for delegation meetings at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference.- Identifying funding programs that are appropriate for City initiatives and priorities.-
- Identifying emerging issues or potential risks that could affect the City’s operations. Proactively develop, communicate and coordinate strategies for the Mayor, Council and senior leadership to mitigate these issues.- Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with other orders of government (regional, provincial, federal), municipal partners, and municipal government associations (AMO, Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), Ontario Big City Mayor's Caucus (OBCM), Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), Metrolinx, etc.), to create awareness and support for our priorities, challenges and aspirational goals.- As a member of the Corporate Affairs team assist in facilitation, coaching and managing of external contractors for specific corporate projects as required.

Requirements:
Applicants require a University Degree with an emphasis on Communications, Political Science or Public Administration. Applicants require four (4) to seven (7) years of experience in Government Relations.
