**Who we are**

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulate the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment.

We also implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

CNSC operates a modern laboratory with internationally recognized experts and a proven track record for valid and reliable results. The Laboratory Services Division (LSD) currently maintains two areas of excellence: radiation instrumentation calibration and sample analysis, including inorganic chemistry and radiochemistry. Our analytical services support various programs within the CNSC, such as environmental monitoring, compliance, nuclear safeguards and forensics.

The CNSC laboratory analyzes various types of samples collected during inspections and environmental monitoring activities. These samples are analyzed for radionuclides and hazardous elements/substances, as well as water quality parameters (e.g., pH, total dissolved solids). The results of the various analyses are made available to CNSC staff to support independent verification of licensee programs and inform future compliance plan activities.

**What you’ll do**

The CNSC is looking for an inorganic chemistry analyst to:

- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of samples including swipes, air filters, water, effluent, soil, sediment, rock, and uranium rich substances using classic and state-of-the-art instruments (e.g., XRF, ICP-MS, IC, SEM, XRD) and methods.
- Review and interpret analytical data, ensure they meet quality criteria, and draft analysis reports.
- Contribute to the development, validation, optimization and implementation of new analytical protocols and methods.
- Provide advice and support to laboratory staff and other CNSC staff members on sample analysis.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Quality Management System documents/procedures in accordance with the ISO 17025 Standard.
- As requested, perform research activities in collaboration with senior analysts, other CNSC divisions and/or national and international partners.

**Required qualifications**:
**Education**:
Master’s degree in analytical chemistry, radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry or a closely related field from a Canadian educational institution or recognized equivalency.

**Language Requirements**:
English Essential

**Experience**:

- Conducting accurate and precise analytical measurements using XRF, ICP-MS, IC, SEM, XRD
- Providing technical advice and support in chemical analyses of environmental samples including water, effluent, soil, sediment, rock, and uranium rich matrices
- Delivering accurate analytical data treatment and result analysis, including statistical analysis of measurement data, measurement uncertainty evaluation and error analysis
- Participating in the development and validation of new analytical methods, including drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and control charts as part of a laboratory Quality Management System

**Knowledge**:

- Laboratory safety rules and practices, such as Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMS)
- Radiation protection practices and procedures
