**About Us**:
The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is an Office of the Legislature. Our Office provides advocacy for children and youth receiving or seeking to receive services under the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act _and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_, and youth involved with the youth justice system. The OCYA is also responsible for providing legal representation for young people in matters related to the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act _and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_. The OCYA conducts investigations and reports on systemic issues arising from the serious injury to or death of a child. The OCYA engages stakeholders in understanding the importance of respecting young people’s individual and collective rights, interests and viewpoints, as well as delivers public education.

**Role**:
The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is currently hiring an Indigenous Engagement Consultant for our Edmonton (North) office. This role has both an internal and external focus, where strong relationship skills, communication and a passion for young people are essential.

Externally this position will play a key role in building relationships and partnerships between the OCYA and First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities and young people across Alberta. This will be essential to ensure that Indigenous communities and stakeholders are active participants in identifying systemic issues and trends they are seeing for the young people in their communities and agencies. The Indigenous Engagement Consultant will inform young people and stakeholders on the mandate and role of the OCYA through a variety of strategies, including planning, developing and facilitating engaging workshops and presentations for children, young people and community stakeholders. The Indigenous Engagement Consultant will work with Indigenous communities and organizations through the sharing of information and community engagement activities. Strong partnerships and effective communication will be the result of the work.

Internally, you will provide advice on how the OCYA best engages with Indigenous communities in Alberta, including leadership, as well as provide advice on current trends and issues. You will keep yourself appraised on the current state of jurisdictional changes in Indigenous child welfare between federal-provincial-Indigenous governments and note how those changes require the OCYA to shift and adapt. You will come with knowledge of First Nation and Métis communities in Alberta and their governance. You will also work to ensure that the capacity and competency of the OCYA is raised through the sharing of Indigenous knowledge and staff training/engagement opportunities.

The Indigenous Engagement Consultant will work with OCYA staff and the Knowledge Keeper to ensure that Indigenous young people are provided with culturally appropriate services and supports when they are working with the OCYA.

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a related field plus 4 years related experience. The 4 years related experience may include: Indigenous engagement; community and youth engagement; working with Indigenous communities/organizations; facilitation; development and delivery of public education programs and presentations; project and event coordination; and supporting young people.

Knowledge of Indigenous people and communities and Indigenous cultural practices is required. Additional preferred experience includes working in child and family services, or youth justice, or an Indigenous child/youth services organization.
