**ROLE OF THE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN**

Under the direction of the Agricultural Manager, the Vegetation Management Technician assists as a weed inspector and herbicide applicator, in accordance with applicable legislation and Athabasca County’s Vegetation Management program.

This seasonal position runs from approximately mid-May to September and offers a busy season of work for those who enjoy working outdoors. Due to adverse weather conditions, work may not be on a regular scheduled basis.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

1. Working under provincial legislation and programs including: the Agricultural Service Board Act, Alberta Weed Control Act, Soil Conservation Act, and the Agricultural Pests Act.

4. Assisting with Provincial agricultural surveys.

5. Working with local producers in weed ID & control, completing crop and pest reports, and giving technical or other support.

6. Maintaining ASB shop.

7. Operate small equipment, trucks with trailers.

8. Participate in safety meetings and training as part of the County’s Health and Safety program.

9. Perform any other duties as required.

**QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS**
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License;
- Educational background in agriculture, environmental or biology or related fields
- Strong plant/weed identification skills (training available)
- Hold an Alberta Pesticide Applicators Certification or be eligible to obtain an Alberta Authorized Assistant applicators license (training available)
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Strong work ethic and self-starter
- Excellent communication, records management, and organizational skills
- Good teamwork, partnering, and networking skills
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Strong commitment to public service
- Comfortable with technology i.e. computers, GIS, GPS (training available)

**Job Types**: Full-time, Seasonal
Contract length: 4-5 months

Schedule:

- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Athabasca, AB: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

**Experience**:

- Landscape maintenance: 1 year (preferred)

Work Location: In person
