Job Description Summary

The incumbent is the primary staff member responsible for determining whether an allegation of non-academic misconduct should move through the formal student discipline process or can be resolved through other forms of dispute resolution and provides students with information and options to ensure they have a clear sense of their choices and the resulting implications for various courses of action. The staff member will meet regularly with students who have been alleged to have committed non-academic misconduct, develop courses of action in response to the allegation, and communicate the results of those decisions with key campus stakeholders.

Beyond managing individual student cases, the Manager, Student Conduct works collaboratively with staff across the Vice President, Students (VPS) portfolio and Faculties to create and sustain conditions for both students and student communities that support the development of a positive and respectful campus environment.

Organizational Status

The Manager, Student Conduct reports to the Director, Student Conduct & Safety. The incumbent also closely with Directors and Managers within the VPS portfolio, and will be in frequent contact with Campus Security, the RCMP, and academic colleagues from across the University.

Work Performed
- Responsible for the UBC Vancouver non-academic student misconduct process including reviewing, investigating, and determining how to proceed in a fair and timely manner on all allegations of non-academic student misconduct. Makes decisions about courses of action based on the presented facts and works to ensure procedural fairness and a high degree of consistency in resolving issues.
- Designs, develops, and implements a range of dispute resolution actions, models, and types which support student learning throughout the resolution process, and which help create a respectful and positive campus environment. This includes regularly engaging in developmental conversations with students, and actively seeking non-punitive and educational resolutions.
- Works with demonstrated expertise in procedural fairness and in student development, effectively connecting student learning and education with suggested resolution actions. The Manager will provide leadership, expert advice, support and consultation to staff across the university in developmental and educationally appropriate approaches to resolving non-academic misconduct concerns.
- Communicates with all students alleged of non-academic misconduct, in person and/or through formal written communications, including summarizing the facts and details of the allegations, possible choices of action and their implications and processes, and any outcomes or decisions which are a result of chosen actions. This includes answering students questions about the process and what they can expect from various actions.
- For cases not resolved through a resolution process which proceed to the formal President s Non-Academic Misconduct Committee, the incumbent will communicate with the student alleged of misconduct to inform them of process, offer the opportunity to meet in advance to discuss process and may monitor the completion of any required actions as a result of the President s decision.
- For cases not resolved through a resolution process which proceed to the formal President s Non-Academic Misconduct Committee, when required, the incumbent will provide guidance to the individual who reported the misconduct including explaining the process and steps involved, scheduling of any witnesses, notifying them of the President s decisions with applicable privacy constraints, and following up on any special requests throughout the formal process.
- Advises, supports, and works collaboratively with other Directors, Associate Directors, and Managers from across the University to set expectations and address issues of non-academic student misconduct and, as required, concerning student behavior, in support of a positive and respectful campus environment.
