Role:
Reporting to the Payroll Supervisor, the Payroll Assistant is responsible for assisting with the administration of payroll for approximately 400 employees. The incumbent posts entries, audits and reconciles various payroll reports. This position provides support to all functions of the payroll department. Organizational / internal relationships include Management, Office Staff, Plant Managers, Supervisors, and Plant Staff.

**Responsibilities**:

- Run payroll bi-weekly for plant or salaried employees as directed by the Payroll Supervisor.
- Calculate and prepare manual cheques as required by Payroll Supervisor.
- Record and review time and attendance adjustments for hourly paid employees on a daily basis. ensuring integrity and accuracy of information.
- Maintain and update employee files which include filing pertinent employee information such as doctor’s notes, warning letters, training records, injury reports, WCB letters, etc. Update wage information in employee folder, record changes in address, phone numbers, and employee transfers, etc.
- Monitor absenteeism and review “No Show” report daily. Record absentees and prepare required reports.
- Prepare benefits package for eligible employees. Maintain files such as Canada Life, Green Shield Canada and RRSP enrollment forms, Blue Cross, etc.
- Monitor and track on a weekly basis employee vacation time.
- File injury claim to WCB, MPI Employers Verification of Earnings, STD claim to insurance company for illness or injury.
- Draft employee related letters, employment verification and memos as required.
- Other payroll and benefits administration as assigned by Payroll Supervisor.

**Requirements**:

- Familiarity with Ceridian - Dayforce is an asset.
- Basic accounting knowledge.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze problems and communicate effectively both verbal and written.
- Very good interpersonal skills and an ability to treat all staff professionally and have an aptitude for dealing with various individuals.
- Ability to exercise discretion, tact, diplomacy and good judgment in dealing with difficult situations and people.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities, adhere to deadlines and work well with others in accomplishing objectives.
- Good working knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft products is important.
- Secondary school graduation plus the completion of courses in accounting and payroll.
- Completion of courses in payroll administration is an asset.
- 2-3 years’ experience in a similar payroll role working in a unionized organization preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
