**Program Details**:
The Clinical Extern Program is a Ministry of Health initiative operating until March 31, 2024. The Clinical Extern (Nursing) position is an opportunity for Nursing students between their 2nd and 4th year of a College of Nurses of Ontario Baccalaureate Nursing Program (e.g. BScN), or final year of a College of Nurses of Ontario approved Practical Nursing program or Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN).

The Clinical Extern (RN/RPN) will participate as a member of the healthcare team, as an unregulated care provider. As part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Clinical Extern will support high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. Clinical externs will collaborate with members of the interprofessional teams within the organization to gain hands-on experience in Nursing services in a hospital setting. The Clinical Extern will develop their competencies through learning, education, experience and reflective practice. Service areas include the Pre-Admission unit, Ambulatory Care, surgical inpatients, integrated stroke, intensive care, and acute medical units.

**Hours**:
The Clinical Extern will work a variety of shifts including weekends and holidays under the supervision of a mentor_. St. Thomas Elgin General will accommodate the Extern’s academic commitments and required obligations to achieve scholarly excellence._

**Qualifications**:

- Nursing students between 2nd and 4th year of a CNO approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) Program, or final year of a College of Nurses of Ontario approved Practical Nursing program OR Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:

- are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or
- are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration (e.g., Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to-Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency) or
- have completed their educational requirements (e.g., BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are waiting to write their registration exam
- Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
- Ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team
- Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in a hospital setting preferred
- Current CPR certification
- Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated problem solving, decision making and conflict resolution skills
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Keen interest in goal-oriented and patient-centered approach to patient care
- Demonstrated computer literacy
- Demonstrated behaviors in alignment with STEGH’s Values and Code of Conduct
