**Position Overview**
Reporting to the Senior Research Project Manager.
The Research Associate will be responsible for collaborating with the Manager and the core Transplant Wellness team in developing evidence-based practice particularly in the area of physical activity, exercise and healthy lifestyle promotion.
**Position Description**
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates individuals and groups in progressive physical activity and/or exercise programs in relation to specific clinical research study protocols in order to support the treatment and management of the relevant medical conditions being addressed by the research team and to improve health by facilitating healthier lifestyle choices
- Screens for risk factors that would affect participation in the research physical activity/exercise
- Observes all necessary precautions in use of equipment and techniques to prevent injury to participants, self and others
- Consults and collaborates with other members of the research team regarding exercise programming
- Provides education regarding relevant therapeutic exercise strategies and wellness behaviour choices
- Maintains records, in accordance with the University of Calgary research standards, with regards to exercise programming and fitness assessments
- Maintains confidentiality
- Responsible for participant scheduling and phone contact
**Qualifications / Requirements**:
- Master's degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science or equivalent required
- CSEP-CEP certification required
- Current CPR for Health Care Provider certification required
- BCLS certification required
- Minimum 2 years current experience working with populations with chronic disease is required
- 2 to 5 years experience in a research environment is required
- Knowledge of University of Calgary's policies including submission of projects to ethics board is required
- Previous experience in clinical research is required
- Knowledge of health information systems (e.g.: ConnectCare), REDCap database and computers is required
- Experience in physical activity/exercise and lifestyle education, testing, instruction, and programming
- Advanced knowledge, skills, and proficiency in the areas of exercise physiology, aging, nutrition, etc
- Experience in physical activity/exercise recommendation/programming for clinical populations
- Strong knowledge of exercise testing protocols in all areas of exercise physiology, including anthropometry, strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity
- Ability to perform anthropometric measures
- Must be able to use considerable independent judgment and initiative to decide whether treatment requested is suitable for the condition and if contraindications exist (or seek guidance from a regulated health professional if the clinical question falls out of the scope of the kinesiologist training)
- Must be able to translate research and evidence into clinical practice
- Preparation and experience in teaching/learning theory is essential with knowledge of education approaches that enhance patient care and health promotion
- Cultural sensitivity and focused patient and community cultural needs
- Must be willing to work flexible hours
