Calgary, Canada University of Calgary Full time

Description

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Community Engagement Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) reports to the Principal Investigator and is directed by the team of two awarded grants: LiveRx - Alberta Innovates (AI) for the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Health System (PRIHS) to implement a province wide program to work towards eradicating Hepatitis C (HCV) in Alberta and Hbcare - Alberta Health Cancer Research for Screening and Prevention (CRSP) funding program focused on implementing a province-wide program to help reduce the burden of hepatocellular (liver) cancer (HCC) in underserved populations by more effectively finding and treating hepatitis C (HCV) and hepatitis B (HBV).

Both programs have distinct but overlapping populations to be engaged and ultimate goals:

(i) The goal of LiveRx is to optimize pre-existing infrastructure, community-based capacity, and pharmacist scope of practice to achieve HCV cure in partnership with public, private and community sectors across Alberta. This program will work towards establishing the most effective, efficient, cost-effective and sustainable ways to enable HCV test-treat-cure through a programmatic approach focused on providing access to vulnerable and marginalized Albertans where they have trusted relationships with community-based health and social service providers. The plan is that the findings from the work done in this program will inform sustainability and future scale planning.
(ii) The goal of HbcCare is to optimize pre-existing infrastructure and community-based capacity across Alberta to screen people for viral hepatitis (mainly HBV), which is an important risk factor for the development of liver cancer (HCC).

The CEC would participate in the process of identifying suitable communities to engage, and designing and implementing appropriate strategies to engage the communities. They will support the facilitation of various community events across the province of Alberta and support formative needs assessment and liver literacy efforts when communities are engaged.

This will include involvement in planning, facilitating, and participating at community and screening events in community-based organizations across Alberta. These organizations could include short term housing shelters, rehabilitation centres, non-profits, refugee clinic, newcomer organizations, AHS clinics/centres, and similar organizations. The CEC will communicate with various organizations to assist in determining needs and assist in identifying a clear plan on best way to run community events at their site.

The Coordinator may also be involved in connecting health care professionals, various pharmacies, community-based organizations, and other agencies or partners together, as required, to support and build relationships among partners. The CEC may support case management for those participants in both projects.

Flexibility in hours and travel to project sites across Alberta and to meetings may be required.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist in identifying stakeholders, working with them to determine needs, rolling out events and maintaining positive relationships
  • Assist the team in managing and preparing event resources inventory including team screening materials and supplies and external resources (eg catering, transportation, gift cards etc)

  • Obtain informed consent under the project while maintaining Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines
  • Comprehensive record management of study documents contributing to a comprehensive study audit trail, and adhering to compliance regulations
  • Travel between sites across Alberta required
